CDS First Program
The Weekly Word from CDS FP, Apr 27–May 1, 2020
Hello First Program Community,
A little early, but Happy Children's Day and Parent's day coming up this week! Let's hope our wishes get answered: we are hopeful to return to campus in term 5. As we await the Ministry of Education’s announcement regarding the country’s next steps, in FP, we balance our planning accordingly. Teachers continue to be hard at work, reaching out via e-learning to meet students’ needs. Meanwhile, we plan for the eventual return to campus and how to make school a safe place for learning.
In our recent survey of FP parents, the question was asked: If the Ministry of Education were to open schools and ask students to return to campus, would you feel safe about your child's return to CDS. Fewer than 10% of FP parents disagreed, and more importantly, we asked what they would need to feel safe returning to school. The answers varied, were logical suggestions, and were often the same as the government’s guidelines. These concerns have been taken into consideration when planning for students’ safe return. Examples of safety measures that would be different from a normal day at school are plentiful: temperature checks, amended timetable, physical distancing, masks, cafeteria seating layout changes, contingency plans for COVID-19 positive cases, visitor restrictions, and more.
Planning for special events such as sports day, virtual field trips, G4 graduation, etc. continues. As plans are finalized, more information will be shared regarding each event.
Parent Teacher Conferences for FP took place last Friday. Thank you to parents for taking the time to communicate with teachers regarding the needs of your children. About 80% of parents took part in meeting teachers throughout the day; others will occur over the next week.
Mr. Bray and FP teachers will continue modeling safety and positivity to students regarding their online presence. Our first session, two weeks ago, focused on students getting parental permission to video conference, as well as suggesting parental supervision. This week, we return with guidance and tips on how to make students’ online experiences safer. Several of these visits with Mr. Bray will occur during this week’s Library period.
Please view pictures below of what e-learning has looked like around FP this past week. We look forward to seeing you digitally throughout the week!
