Ms. Larrabee's 1st Grade Class
The Buzz This Week... (8/31 - 9/4)
Writing: We are continuing to establish the writing community this week. We are learning how to correctly form a sentence, write in their writing journals, and come up with topics to write about. Thank you for completing their homework with them over the weekend to help with our writing community.
Reading: In reading, we are beginning to practice our expectations of what to do during guided reading groups. We're learning what readers do, why we read, and what different reading groups will look like. We'll also read Quick as A Cricket by Audrey Wood. Students will complete a writing prompt based from this book as well.
Word Work: This week we're beginning to study sight words and word family patterns. Each day we'll do a different activity to learn about our word family pattern and sight words. Each Monday, your child will come home with a piece of paper with their sight words and word families for you to practice with them at home. This week, this paper will be coming home Tuesday night.
Science: We're beginning our first science unit this week, what is a scientist. We'll be introducing science and what scientists do.
Math: - Over the first few weeks and continuing this week we have been learning about Understanding Numbers. This unit establishes classroom routines: calendar, daily schedule, expectations. Along with routines the focus of these investigations is teaching basic addition strategies through games. These games will be used during our math workshops throughout the year. Some of games we have played so far are compare, collect 20, and five in a row. These games help us work on counting, keep track of counting, and recounting.
We decorated our writing journals to get us excited to write this year!
Here we are celebrating PJ day!
Last week we each got dictionaries to help us spell. We walked around the room and put each other's names in our dictionaries.
8/24 - 8/28
We also earned our first marble party! We've worked really hard to follow directions the first time, show listening skills, and follow set classroom routines/ procedures. We had a lot of fun wearing our PJ's and learning with our stuffed animal friends.
On Friday, we met with our buddy room, Ms. Weiterman's 3rd grade class. Throughout the year, we will be completing various learning activities as well as service projects with Ms. Weiterman's class. On Friday we met our buddies and completed a get to know you activity! We had a blast!
