OCPL Weekly Update
January 14, 2015
We had our first Wild Wednesday, which are being held on the early release days for OC schools, today at Main with a Penguin visit from the Newport Aquarium. We were lucky enough to have Blueberry, the African penguin and 175 admirers here today! Check out Blueberry and Dan in front of our Penguin wall! Next month we will have animals from the Second Chances Wildlife Center for Wild Wednesday.
Events coming soon to a library near you:
· Lego Robotics on Tuesday, January 19th. Signs ups are full and there is a waitlist online.
· Tinker Tuesday on Tuesday, Janaury 19th, at Mahan. Drop in STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art and Math) challenges at the branches. The 1st and 3rd Tuesday of each month are at Mahan. The 2nd and 4th Tuesday are at South Oldham.
· The usual baby, toddler, story and adventure times!
· No Maker Monday this week because we are closed on Monday for Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Have a great week!
Not much to report this week. We closed early on Tuesday because of the weather.
On Wednesday, the NOHS art students came by with new artwork. This time they brought watercolors. As you can see from the photo, the pieces are quite beautiful. They brought around 40 pictures in all! We appreciate having the art in the library, and we’re thankful for the generosity of the teachers and students.
Would anyone like some shirts? There are 3 shirts that have been in the Mahan breakroom forever (see pictures). The two library shirts are Larges, and the one that isn’t a library shirt is a Medium. Please let me know if you’re interested.
That’s about it. I’m off on Friday and Saturday, so please contact Lisa if anything comes up. See you next week!
Outreach & Adult Programming
Don’t forget to submit your entries for the staff reader’s advisory challenge! If you can’t submit via the form, email me your responses. Adult Winter Reading Challenge has started off well, thanks to everyone spreading the word! Let me know if you have any questions about it.
This Saturday is Game Day, 1-5pm at Main.
Next Saturday (1/23) is our Papercraft Extravaganza day. Please help promote this! There will be a scrapbooking class in the morning from 10-noon (registration required). From noon-5pm is a drop-in open meeting for paper crafters of all kinds. So, scrapbooking, card making, model making, stamping, whatever. Just a chance for paper crafters to get together & work! This was organized in part by a couple of our patrons, so I’m looking forward to learning a lot myself.
We’re rescheduling the NCRC testing for some time in February. Please keep letting people know this is available. It’s a great free opportunity for anyone, but particularly those looking for jobs in manufacturing. Interestingly enough, this is also a metric that companies use to determine where they will build their businesses. The more people who take the test, the more attractive a location is to manufacturers.
Teens & Main Circ
Next Week for Teens:
Book Besties @ Main on Tuesday @ 4:30 p.m. - We’ve had a good turnout for volunteers, but could still use a few more.
Tinker Tuesdays @ Branches - We haven’t had any teens sign up to help Susan B. at South and Mahan. If you talk to teens or their parents, let them know about this opportunity to earn service hours. They can sign-up @ www.oldhampl.org/teens.html
Teen Coffee House - If weather stays nice, we’ll have our first Tuesday night coffee house. This upcoming week is “Teen Trivia Night.” We’ll have prizes for the winners! Of course, games and study time, and free coffee, hot chocolate, and snacks.
