The Puma Pride
Week of October 15, 2018
Principal's Message
The fall weather has finally arrived. Willow Dale students had an exciting week.
Congratulations to Ms. Andres', Ms. DeLos Angeles', and Ms. Ricci's classes who won the Khan Academy LearnStorm Challenge first incentive! Super effort!
Congratulations to our second graders! They also won the Playground Pride Award. The second grade received an extra fifteen-minute recess on Friday for being PAWSOME. These students regularly exhibit a Positive attitude, Act respectfully, Work responsibly, and they make Safe choices.
Congratulations are in order for Mr. Freedman's class. They won the Silver Spoon Award for having PAWSOME behavior during lunchtime! This class will be served a special lunch by Mr. Julius and Mrs. Perkins courtesy of our Home and School Association. Way to go Mr. Freedman and class!
October is Fire Prevention Month. Our Kindergarten students learned about fire safety from Mr. Velten and two of the Hartsville firefighters. They also had the opportunity to check out a fire engine. Each student received their own fire hat.
November Parent/Teacher Conferences are fast approaching. All parents should have received an email with a link for Sign-Up Genius to select a day and time for a conference meeting. If you did not receive the email, please reach out to your child's teacher.
On October 18 at 10:18 am, Willow Dale will join the rest of the district schools in participating in the National Great American Shake-out drill. Teachers will review procedures for this weather emergency drill prior to October 18.
All the best for a great week!

Digital Literacy Class
The beginning of the school year in Digital Literacy is all about learning what technology can do for us! In grades K and 1, students are harnessing the laptops to learn math, literacy, and technology skills. They work on their mouse skills through different websites while practicing phonics and number sense. In grades 2 and 3, students are working on creating products with technology and staying safe online. They are using Google Suite to review and refine their skills. In grades 4 and 5, students are taking everything they’ve learned in the past, to produce something that reflects their understanding of a topic.
Throughout the year, all grade levels will be working on laptops and iPads. We will be using our problem solving and collaboration skills through coding and robotics. Students will discover that learning with technology is less about the specific device and more about how you can enhance learning with the skills you gain.
Attendance Reminders
While coming to school each and every day is important, it is equally important to monitor our children’s health. If a child is sick, please keep him/her home. Our teachers will work with students who have fallen ill to make sure they do not fall behind in the classroom.
If your child is absent from school, you will be notified via a voice message that will come to the primary phone number listed in Skyward. In addition, an email will be sent to the first email address listed in Skyward. Please be sure that your phone number and email address is updated in Skyward. If an automated call is made, and you believe it to be in error, please call the main office of the school. Automated calls and emails may still occur even if you’ve contacted the school regarding the absence. Absence notes will still be required. You can send a written note in with your child on the day that he or she returns to school. You can also email the excuse note.
E-Mailing Attendance Notes
- Parents with children in Willow Dale may e-mail attendance notifications/notes to the following address: WDAttendance@centennialsd.org
- E-mail notifications are encouraged on the morning of the absence day. However, e-mailed absence notes may be sent on the day following the absence.
