News for the week of December 3rd

Help 5th grade!

It's time for 5th grade to begin searching for Exhibition topics. If you read an interesting article about how we share the planet with others--including animals, natural resources, etc.--or the effects of how we share the planet (deforestation, pollution, etc.), please clip/copy the article, and share it with a 5th grade teacher. Happy hunting!

Book signing at Fiction Addiction

This Saturday, December 8th, 1-3pm, acclaimed children's author Melinda Long will be signing books at Fiction Addiction in Greenville (behind the Haywood Mall). Ms. Long, who lives in Upstate South Carolina, wrote the notable picture books How I Became a Pirate and Pirates Don't Change Diapers. At this event, she will be promoting her newest book, The Twelve Days of Christmas in South Carolina. This book will be on sale for $12.95. Christmas-themed refreshments will be served.

Any of Ms. Long's books would be great gifts for the book lovers (young or older) on your holiday shopping list. If you can't make it to the book signing, you can reserve a personalized copy of any of Ms. Long's books by contacting Fiction Addiction in advance at 864-675-0540 or at info@fiction-addiction.com.

Book of the Week: Hibernation Station by Michelle Meadows and Kurt Cyrus

Hibernation Station, written by Michelle Meadows and illustrated by Kurt Cyrus, is a nominee for the 2012-13 South Carolina Picture Book Award. This book is a great read-aloud that tells about a group of animals getting ready to hibernate for the winter. At first, various animals have trouble going to sleep, they're hungry or wet, or they're just plain lonely. Gradually, with the help of the bears in charge, each animal settles in for a long winter's sleep.

The whimsical illustrations, rendered in pencil with digital color, and the fun rhymes really keep this story going. I especially enjoyed seeing the snakes' pajamas! Young readers will be enchanted by this story, and it could lead them to explore how animals survive cold winters.

Pair this book with Under the Snow by Melissa Stewart or What Do Animals Do in Winter? by Melvin and Gilda Berger for a great discussion about animals in winter!
