Reasons for the Disaster

In June 2013 a cloudburst in Uttarakhand led to devastating floods and landslides. The continuous rainfall caused the Chorabari Glacier to melt and triggered the flooding of the Mandakini river.

Steps taken by the Government

  • Operation Rahat- Was the name given to the Indian Air Force's rescue operations to evacuate civilians affected by the 2013 North India floods. It was one of the largest operations of the Indian Armed Forces in several decades.


  • Operation Surya Hope- Is the name given to the India Army's rescue operations to evacuate civilians affected by the 2013 North India floods.

Steps taken by NGO's

Many NGO's like Goonj, Oxfam India and Pragya have contributed in the Uttarakhand flood relief by giving medical supplies, cloths, cooking utensils, cereals, etc. that were donated by the people.
