Reminders for ALL students:
2019-2020 Class Registration
All students at CLMS have signed up for their classes for the next school year. The counselors completed this registration at the end of January. Please review the classes that they signed up for. You can locate them in the “Course Request” tab located in your child’s Student Vue.
If you would like to make any changes, you may do so on their Course Verification Sheet that will be distributed at Progress Report Q3 time. If you would like to make a change, there will be a DROP/ADD section where you can make any changes you feel are needed.
AVID Elective Course
AVID
The AVID Elective is a 6th through 12th grade component of the AVID Secondary System that prepares students in the academic middle for admission to a 4-year college/university. This course provides students with the skills needed to be successful in advancing academically with the ultimate goal of attending college.*Applications due by Thursday, April 11th, 2019.

Zero Bell- Rising 7th & 8th Graders
Rising 7th and 8th graders are eligible to take an elective course before the start of the school day.
Details:
- Enrolling in a zero bell allows a student to take an extra elective class.
- Zero bell classes meet before school from 8:15-9:08 am.
- Parents/Guardians must provide transportation to school each day.
- Zero bell classes are for those students enrolled in AVID, a full year music class, and/or a high school credit foreign language.
*Applications are due by June 1st, 2019.

Stem Opportunity
The Virginia Space Grant Consortium will offer Grade 8 students a summer experience at ODU designed to increase interest and curiosity in science, technology, engineering, and math. For additional information on this free of charge program, visit https://blast.spacegrant.org/. Spaces are limited.
Volunteer Opportunity
The Virginia Aquarium's youth volunteer application deadline is Thursday, February 28, 2019 at 3:00 p.m. To see what the Aquarium has to offer, students may visit our youth volunteer listings at https://www.virginiaaquarium.com/about-us/Pages/youth-volunteer-opportunities.aspx. Three letters of recommendation are required when the application is submitted. The letters of recommendation cannot be from family members.
P.S. A quick note about the positions. If you are familiar with the Aquarium, as you review the website and application, you will notice that junior docent is not listed as an option. The name has changed to Floor Docent and requires service as a Touch Pool Exhibit Guide volunteer before placement. Also, a few weeks ago we added a new opportunity, Aquarium Store Retail Assistant. Students interested in this position should write “Aquarium Store” on the first page of the application next to “Area of Interest”.
Aquarium Store Retail Assistant
Volunteer assists store personnel with daily duties such as greeting customers, stocking, straightening merchandise, and minor cleaning. Applicant must be at least 13 years old, outgoing, friendly, and comfortable standing for an extended period of time. Legible handwriting and the ability tolerate large crowds is also essential. This position requires a minimum of one four hour shift a week. Volunteer must be available at least nine weeks between June and August. This is a summer position with the option to volunteer during the school year. Hours during the school year are flexible.

BEACH GIRLS ROCK!
FINAL WORKSHOP: March 30th, 2019 from 8 a.m. - 12 p.m.

The Beach Girls Rock (BGR)! a leadership empowerment series for girls in Grades 5-8 in Virginia Beach City Public Schools (VBCPS) since 2013, will host its final workshop of the year Saturday, March 30 at Salem High School from 8a.m. - 12p.m. The theme is “All the World’s a Stage: Take the Lead” which will spotlight the school’s Visual and Performing Arts Academy.
The workshop is designed to give girls the opportunity to focus on girl leadership, college-career readiness and interpersonal skills as well as, elementary to middle and middle to high school transitions. Parents or guardians are also welcomed to participate in the parent-focused breakout sessions which occur concurrent to student breakout sessions.

11th Annual African American Male Summit
The 12th Annual African-American Male Summit was held Saturday at Green Run High School with 300 students in attendance. Corporate Landing Middle School was represented by 14 wonderful students. The event was open to Virginia Beach City Public School students and was held to help motivate the young men to excel academically and become strong community leaders.
The keynote speaker, Dr. Charles S. Corprew III, is a 1989 graduate of Green Run High School and a national leader in education. A variety of booths were set up for students to visit that were run by small business leaders, doctors, mental health professionals, college and university staff, etc. CLMS parents were also invited and participated in specially designed parent workshops. We are looking forward to next year’s AA Summit and hope that you will join us!

We are excited to introduce to you our new Student Support Specialist! Mr. Hall is at CLMS on Tuesdays & Thursdays. His roll involves conducting school intervention programs for students who consistently demonstrate inappropriate behaviors that interfere with learning. He identifies appropriate interventions for students identified as being at-risk and assists in the coordination of alternative services for students with school administrators and counselors. We are lucky to have Mr. Hall on our team!
