Leader in Me 7 Habits: Habits Intro/Overview
Many of you have asked, “What are these ‘7 Habits’ my child keeps talking about at home?” It’s a great question! Every day, your students are learning the 7 Habits framework. These are tools and skills for developing into young leaders. If your kids are talking about these at home, that means these helpful tools are sticking, even beyond the classroom! Celebrate this with them! Over the next 7 weeks, I’ll give a quick overview of each habit, so you can join the conversation with your students at home. This year we have been focusing on the habits below. Please take a moment to read them with your child and discuss what they are doing to develop each habit.
1. Be Proactive: Be a responsible person, take initiative, choose your actions/attitude and don't blame others when a mistake is made.
2. Begin with the End in Mind: I make plans in advance. I set goals for myself. I think about how my choices will impact my future and I do meaningful work.
3. Put First Things First: I make a schedule and dedicate time to the most important things. I'm organized & I stay focused. I try to minimize distractions and regroup when I get off task.
4.Think Win-Win: I look for solutions to problems. I consider the feelings and needs of others. I am kind and cooperative when I work with others.
5. Seek First to understand, then to Be Understood: I listen to other people's feelings and ideas without interrupting. I use my eyes and ears when listening. I try to understand other people's experiences. I don't make assumptions about others.
6. Synergize: I get along well with others. I value the strengths of others and allow myself to learn from them. I ask for other people's ideas. I know we can accomplish more as a team than I can on my own.
7. Sharpen the Saw: I take care of my body by exercising, resting and eating healthy foods. I learn new things. I spend time with family and friends. I balance my time between work and play. I reflect on ways to grow.
Bonus Habit. Find your voice and inspire others to find theirs: I can identify my strengths. I pursue my passions. I look for ways to help others. I make the world better.
