Counselor's Corner for the Week of 11/17-11/21

It's almost Thanksgiving!

This is a busy week at Brittin Elementary as we prepare for Thanksgiving break while trying to keep up with the excitement of the students. I'm very thankful to work with such a great group of people this year! Our students this year are some of the nicest and most considerate students that we've had at Brittin, which is an excellent reflection of our faculty and staff.

With 2nd semester drawing closer to an end, please consider referring students to SST that show academic deficits. The referral and subsequent meetings help with documentation in case retention is considered or for referrals for additional services. As of right now, most students will be met on within two weeks of the referral, pending a completed SST packet (including a vision/hearing screening).

Upcoming Events for this Week

  • The Student of the Month Ceremony is on Tuesday, November 18th at 2:30. Please have students in the MPR by 2:25. An updated list will be sent out on Monday. Please check the list for students that our faculty/staff members have nominated from your class.

  • The 15th Air Support Operation Squadron (ASOS) will be at Brittin on Wednesday, November 19th. They will be reading to pre-K through 3rd grades. I don't believe that they will be coming with books, so if you have a book that you would like to have read to your students, please have it ready for the airmen. They will be coming during the Reading block of your schedule and can be used as a workstation in your classroom, as suggested by Administration.

  • I will be unavailable on Wednesday, November 19th from 10-12 due to a Terra Nova webinar that I have to attend.

  • On Friday, November 21st, the Homework: A Parent's Guide to Helping without Freaking Out workshop will be at 9:00. This is a joint workshop with Murray Elementary School. If you have any of the forms that were returned by parents, please send them to me so that we can keep an eye on the number of people planning to attend.

  • We're still working on getting soldiers back in Brittin! We had four soldiers show up for our support unit, 1-76 AR, this past week. We will be receiving volunteers from two companies from 1-76, HHB and Bravo company. The other two companies will be supporting Kessler Elementary. The soldiers from those two companies will be coming every other week so that each company will be here once-a-month. I spoke to the BOSS president and vice president this past week. They are both new (within the past two months) and were unfamiliar with the volunteer opportunity available at Brittin. It was brought up at the last BOSS meeting and Brittin has been invited to attend future meetings in order to gain more volunteers. I will be meeting with the vice president this week to see how we can get more involvement with BOSS this year.
