K-8 SCHOOL NEWS
ALL ABOUT ADAPTATIONS ~ Eighth grader scholars are learning all about adaptations this Wednesday, December 5 at 1 pm in Ms. Angelo’s Virtual Classroom! Scholars will take a trip in history to discover technologies that have allowed humans to survive: fire, clothes, farming, and written language. Scholars will then try to imagine what life would have been like without these things. Don’t miss out on the fun!
HEALTHY READING ~ Join Ms. Kenbeek this Friday, December 7 at 11 am in her Virtual Classroom for some healthy reading fun! During this reading Learning Lab, scholars will be reading nonfiction passages all about being healthy!
MATH QUEST ~ Second and third grade scholars are invited to our Math Quest Learning Lab this Friday, December 7 at 9 am in Ms. Popelar’s Virtual Classroom! Scholars will continue with their geometry projects, apply knowledge & skills about the properties of quadrilaterals, and finish designing their 2D town using different types of quadrilaterals!
MISS D.’S SUCCESS TIP OF THE WEEK ~ Don’t miss weekly Learning Labs! Our scholars benefit so much from attending live Learning Labs sessions- they are able to interact with their classmates, their teachers, and they are given the opportunity to practice using their voice! Make it a goal for the rest of the semester for your scholar to attend all live Learning Lab sessions and watch the benefit pour in!
ONLINE HIGH SCHOOL NEWS
AVID TUTORIAL ~ AVID tutorials play an important role in the AVID Elective class. Tutorials give scholars opportunities to use their knowledge and experience to facilitate learning in small study groups that leads to increased scholar participation and success. Tutorial opportunities are 100% scholar initiated and led. This collaborative process encourages scholars to ask questions about their learning and the learning of others, promoting higher level thinking and problem solving that supports self-directed learners.
SCIENCE WET LABS ~ Our Fresno and San Diego science labs will take place this Friday, December 7 from 8:30 am-4:30 pm. You can still RSVP if you have not done so already. Contact your science teacher today if you have questions about the labs.
TURKEY TROT ~ This is the final week of our Turkey Trot for Learning Lab attendance. Make sure to attend all of your learning labs to earn a prize! This week, Mrs. Ginn’s homeroom class is still in the lead!

SOCIAL-EMOTIONAL LEARNING (SEL) SPOTLIGHT ~ Join us as we explore the connection between your values and the decisions made every day, while giving you a newfound appreciation for the people, things, and activities you value.
CALIFORNIA STATE UNIVERSITY DEADLINE EXTENSION ~ With prospective scholars, their families and communities facing hardship due to the wildfires affecting the entire state, the California State University will extend the priority application deadline for admission to the Fall 2019 term to 11:59 pm next Saturday, December 15, for all applicants.
EDISON SCHOLARS PROGRAM ~ Seniors, the deadline is approaching for the Edison Scholars Program, which awards 30 $40,000 scholarships! Applicants must live in SCE's service territory and plan to be a full-time undergraduate college freshman majoring in a STEM field in Fall 2019. Eligible scholars must be a high school senior, have at least a cumulative 3.0 GPA and demonstrate financial need. Scholars from underserved communities and ethnic minorities are encouraged to apply.

EXCEPTIONAL SCHOLAR SERVICES
DID YOU KNOW? ~ PLOP stands for present levels of performance and can be a form or a simple email that describes a scholar’s current abilities, skills, weaknesses, and strengths—academically, socially and physically. PLOP explains how learning issues affect your child’s ability to learn the general education curriculum. It also explains how your scholar handles academic subjects and everyday functional activities, from socializing to tying shoelaces.
Webinar SPOTLIGHT ~ Shout, Stomp, Slam! How to Communicate and Connect with a Child Who Doesn’t Want to Talk: In this webinar this Wednesday, December 5 at 10 am, you will learn strategies for responding instead of reacting to your behaviorally challenged child; how to lead your child to a calm place by fostering emotional regulation; how to teach your child to manage his frustration and disappointment without yelling; and how to de-stress the school and homework experience.
