The overthrow of the Hawaiian Kings
Thesis
If it wasn't for the role Pres. Harrison, Pres. Cleveland, and Minister John Stevens, the overthrow would not been possible.
President Grover Cleveland
President Grover Cleveland was the first to be elected as a democratic president. He was born in New Jersey in 1837. He played a key role in the overthrow of the Hawaiian Kingdom by being able to reject a lot of private pension bills to the civil war veterans. He rejected a bill to distribute seed grain to farmers in Texas. He rejected a bill for giving pensions to disabilities by not caused by military services. He put an end to the provisional government. He sent a U.S. Minister to Hawaii. He said that annexation was an act of war. http://learning.blogs.nytimes.com/2012/01/17/jan-17-1893-hawaiian-monarchy-overthrown-by-america-backed-businessmen/
Minister John L. Stevens
He ordered the Navy sailors and the U.S> Marines to protect the committee. He was assigned to Hawaii and supported the overthrow. He was racist to the Hawaiians, he described them as semi-barbaric. He represents U.S. as an all matters including political representation of the U.S. He supported the committee of safety-The over throw of the Hawaiian kingdom. The committee of safety talks to Stevens about supporting coup d tat, and he says yes to it. He threatens the queen and ask her to surrender but she never surrenders to the U.S.
Presidnet Benjamin Harrison
He was president during Kalakaua's reign. Reciprocity treaty-Hawaii would not be charged a tariff or a tax on the sugar they sent to the U.S. In 1887, reciprocity treaty had the same conditions but this time the U.S. says they will only renew the treaty if he annex Pearl Harbor. Kalakaua says no at first but they forced him to sign it, giving power to his cabinet composed of foreigner. In the senate, he introduced the treaty of annexation for Hawaii.
Historical significance
Is Hawaii legally and lawfully a state of the union?
If it wasn't for the role Pres. Harrison, Pres. Cleveland, and Minister John Stevens, the over throw would not been possible. This topic is important in history because it's explaining how Hawaii became annexed to the U.S. The long term significance about this is that Hawaii is apart of the U.S.
Hawaii being annexed
This picture is showing that the Hawaiian flag is being lowered and so the U.S. flag could be raised to show that Hawaii has been annexed.
