Dress for the Weather
- We suggest layers so they can adjust from inside school to outside and temperature swings from morning to afternoon.
- Make sure that you check forecasts for potential rain. We send students out in light sprinkles but will hold them inside with stronger rain.
- When temperatures really drop, make sure students have clothes that will keep them warm enough to be outside for 15-30min.
This is especially important as we make our decisions for inside/outside recess assuming students are dressed for the day's weather. In general, we do not allow students to stay inside because they are not prepared for the weather.

Student Health: Cold & Flu Season
We are starting to see the typical increases we see in student illness heading into the fall and winter. This has many parents wondering ...
WHEN SHOULD I KEEP MY CHILD HOME?
We certainly want to minimize the spread of illness in our school while also avoiding students missing school when they don't need to.
As such, please use these guidelines and keep a child home from school when any of these apply ...
- Fever greater than 100.0 degrees: A fever lets us know that our body is fighting something off. We are contagious during this time and need rest. Students should be fever free for at least 24 hours, without fever-reducing medication, before returning to school.
- Vomiting and/or diarrhea: Students should stay home for 24 hours to make sure they can keep food/liquids down.
- Sore throat with a fever greater than 100.0 degrees: Students should stay home until they are fever free for 24 hours without fever-reducing medication. If they are diagnosed with Strep throat, then they should stay home until they have been on the antibiotics for 24 hours.
- New onset persistent cough: Students should stay home if they have a new onset persistent cough or they are coughing so much it keeps them from participating in class or disrupts their classmates. Student may return when their cough has significantly improved.
Of course, there are always exceptions. Please contact our school nurse with any questions.
Cough Drops
At Pioneer, students can have cough drops if they follow these simple guidelines. Cough drops must ...
- Be managed by the student ... not the teacher or nurse.
- Be stored in your child's backpack.
- Not become a disruption to learning for your child, other students, or the teacher.
- Not be shared with other students.
- Only be used when needed and on a temporary basis.
We expect parents who choose to send cough drops to school to share and reinforce these expectations with their child. Students who do not meet these expectations will no longer be allowed to have cough drops at school. Parent/Gurardian will be notified if a student fails to meet these guidelines and will no longer be allowed to have cough drops at school.
