Message from Brenda
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,
Principal recruitment presentations.
Thursday 30th May (tomorrow) in The Centre at GS. Please arrive at 6:00 pm for the briefing before the first candidate presents at 6.15 pm.
Green week is coming!
Please refer to the body of the Newsletter for the exciting programmes taking place at school. There are many ways your child and family can get involved.
School Uniform
A gentle reminder that all students will need to be wearing the new school uniform from August 2019. If you are unsure how to order the uniform, please contact the PTA on pta@glenealy.net
Long Weekend
As noted on the school calendar, children will not come to school next Thursday 6th or Friday 7th June. Thursday was allocated as a CPD day for staff, however earlier in the year all staff attended a Saturday CPD training day so this will be a day in lieu for staff this year. Friday celebrates Dragon Boat Festival. For those of you racing in corporate or social teams, all the very best!
Kind regards
Brenda

Messages from The Green Team
Tetra Pak Recycling
GREAT NEWS!...........We have found a recycler who is going to recycle tetra packs and juice boxes and we are setting up a regular collection point at school at school for our community. We need your help to collect the packaging. (only tetrapaks please e.g. juice boxes and milk cartons.)
To prepare your packaging for recycling, you need to cut it open, clean it and leave it to dry. It won’t take up too much space to store ready for the collection day. It’s one way to reduce how much rubbish that goes to landfill.
We will be collecting the packaging before school on the playground on Monday 10th June.
We have made a movie to help you prepare your tetrapaks for recycling.
Take your action for World Ocean Day
FURTHER ACTION YOU CAN TAKE
With 'World Ocean Day' coming up, there are many ways that students and families can take action for our seas. Within Hong Kong there are regular community beach clean ups that welcome volunteers.
Plastic Free seas (http://www.plasticfreeseas.org) organise beach clean ups monthly between September and June. The next one is taking place this Saturday 1st June at Sam Pak Wan (North Plaza, Discovery Bay) between 2 - 4pm.
This is organised and run by Plastic Free Seas and not Glenealy School. Children must be supervised by an adult. You do not need to sign up.
If you would like to volunteer all participants must:
1. Wear closed-toe shoes (no flip flops or open sandals)
2. Bring a full reusable water bottle, hydrate well before the day of the cleanup
3. Bring sunscreen, bug spray and a hat is advisable
4. Wear clothing appropriate for the weather. Jeans are NOT advisable for hot weather. If there is a chance of rain please bring a rain coat.
Weather note: This community cleanup has been organised with Discovery Bay residents in mind. As such, Plastic Free Seas often wait and cancel as late as possible if there is bad weather. If you are coming from outside of DB, you will have to make up your own mind knowing that - if there is heavy rain or lightning before the start of the cleanup - it may be cancelled at the last minute. Cancellations will appear on the DB Green Facebook page on the day of the cleanup, when a decision is made.
ALSO... Whilst there are regular community clean-ups happening throughout Hong Kong, you don't have to wait until organised days to take action!
Why not hold your own family beach clean-up on a beach nearby? Could you help clean up a beach on your next holiday? How about helping to clean up around our Hong Kong streets or in the community? Did you know that litter dropped on the street doesn’t stay there? Rainwater and wind carries plastic waste into streams and rivers, and through drains. Drains lead to the ocean!
Read here (https://www.wwf.org.uk/updates/how-does-plastic-end-ocean) for more information about how plastic ends up in our seas
