Student Profile

We sure appreciate those of you that have taken the time to complete the survey below. We know that everyone is busy. If you haven't had a chance yet, please take a few minutes to fill out the survey about your child below. This gives us a more complete picture of your child as a learner.

Back to School Night

Back to School Night is next week. As I am sure you noticed in last week's school newsletter, the format will be a bit different this year. There will be a 15 minute school presentation and a 15 minute classroom presentation. Children are invited to attend. We will share the classroom schedule with you as soon as we know it.

Math

YAY! The official start of math was today. I gave the students a pre-assessment last week to see what they know and what they will need to work on. Please look for the Unit 1 Math letter that came home with your child today. This unit focuses on Place Value and Adding and Subtracting. I will communicate with you about skills you can help with at home.

Science/Social Studies

Right now we are focused on Science. Tomorrow we will start our investigation of seeds. Have your child tell you about the Six Kingdoms of Living Things or what they have learned about seeds so far.

Reading

Last week we reviewed how to pick a “good fit” book for silent reading and selected books to be read at school. This week our focus is on the strategies that good readers use to better comprehend text. We're practicing asking questions, making predictions, and making connections with our silent reading texts using post-it notes to record our thinking. Later this week, we will learn how to effectively “buzz” with each other about our thinking (discuss the questions, predictions, and connections we've made). We will also start keeping a record of the amount of time and number of pages we’re reading each day at school.

Writing

We are beginning the year with narrative writing, building on their work in third grade with personal narratives and fairy tales. Students took a pre-assessment this Tuesday and have begun to brainstorm topics they might use for their first piece of writing. Next, we will take time to expand on the ideas we’ve already generated and work to create fictional stories from those personal memories. What an adventure!!

Homework

UPDATE: We wanted you to know that there will be follow up pages for lessons that we teach in our Social Emotional/Second Step curriculum. These home links are optional, but your child will receive class points if they turn them in.
