A Message from Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Proudfoot
As we enter the 3rd week of instruction it is incredibly important to celebrate the monumental task of starting the school year in such a positive and supportive way of each other! Panther Pride, our sense of community, and shared beliefs to put our students first in all decisions will ensure our continued success through any challenges set before us.
Another very important thing is to please help reinforce with your child that "remote learning days" at school require them to do their school work and engage in instruction. It is incredibly important that our students are learning 5 days a week even if they are not physically in school 5 days! If you haven't yet, I would strongly encourage watching Mrs. Proudfoot's video below about online learning and how to set up a work area in your home to make sure your child is fully present for learning!
Please note that since there is a plethora of information for parents that we want you all to have easy access to, we are formatting the parent Smore Panthergram newsletters to have the newest information first, and then at the end of the Smore information that parents may need as a reference at a later time. This Smore's most notable updates are:
- School Info App - Information on how to use and set up the School info app to communicate with your child's teacher and to get important information from the school.
- Attendance - This is the first week that attendance will be required for all students engaged in Remote Learning. Please make sure that your child takes attendance in his/her digital classroom before 2:00pm. Every day! If you DO NOT have internet access to complete this task, please make sure to let your child's teacher know ASAP so that we can work out a system for calling into the school for attendance to be take.
- Health, Safety, and Attendance Procedures - The District has received new guidance as of last Friday regarding some of these regulations. More information will be coming soon!
- Updates from the PTO and Fundraising - The PTO has several ways to help fundraise for the school! Please look at their message in the Smore!
- After School Program - If you haven't yet, you will be getting a form in your child's folder regarding the after school program. We are working hard to establish something to support students and families after school as best we can. We are also considering making it open to children as low as 1st grade.
As we continue to move into our hybrid model, we will continue to grow our skills and revise as is needed to make the absolute best educational experience possible for our students.
PS - I love this picture of one of our 4th grade students! I can't think of a better message: Strong, Smart, Cool, Kind!
Panther Strong!!!
School Info App - Communicating with your child's teacher(s)
How to Get messages from your child's teachers: One important way to get messages from your child's teacher and to make sure that you are getting updates from the school is to go to "My Alerts". Once in "my alerts" make sure that "Enable Push Notifications" is turned on and that all of the buttons are turned "on".
Next... look at the bottom of the screen, you will see the picture of a bell next two an icon of two people. Click on the icon of the 2 people. This will then bring up teachers names along with icons to turn on notifications. Search out your child's teacher(s) and turn on those notifications.
If you would like to send your child a message, go back to the main screen and click "conversations" this then works just like text messaging on your smart phone. Make sure to put a title to the message so you know who you are sending it to when you go back to the app.
What we are working on:
- Parent Absence Excuse Form - We should be able to have an easy quick form to fill out through the app that will help parents when informing the school of a child's absence.
- Notifications - Ways to make the notifications on the app more specific as to where to look so that you can get to messages an news more efficiently.
- Layout - Making the layout of the app more easily used by parents by putting the most important "buttons" on the first page of the app.
A word of advice - Always check and make sure when you are in the app that you are in the correct school. Make sure that it is the Campbell Savona Elementary school:)
Health, Safety, and Attendance Procedures
On Friday, September 18, Steuben County Public Health released revised guidance regarding follow-up procedures for any student or staff who present with any of the COVID-19 symptoms either at home or while in school. Please view the new guidance provided in the flowchart below. On Monday, September 21st, the District will utilize the new guidance to revise our Health and Safety protocols and will provide more detailed information to our community regarding our new follow up procedures specific to our district. The quick take away is that if a student or staff member is sent home with symptoms, the rest of their family does not have to quarantine if they do not have symptoms. This will be huge to allow our faculty to work and kids to be in school.
Another great resource is the video embedded below. It is a great teaching tool should your child have to be tested. It walks through the process in a very child friendly way to help reduce anxiety.
P.A.W.S.
Our PBIS team has met and created PAWS posters along with formal lesson plans for our faculty to teach and reinforce PAWS in our school! As parents, you can start at home before we start school to get your child acclimated to PAWS and being safe around others!
Below is the addendum to our CSCS Code of Conduct which explains in more detail the expectations of safety.

What will students be doing on "Remote" Days
Through many conversations and parent feedback, we at school understand that due to every families unique circumstances that providing flexibility is very important. This is why we worked very hard to have as little time strictly scheduled as possible. We this in mind, the only weekly scheduled time for ALL students to log onto Zoom and attend class will be on Mondays with their entire class (All teams! Red, White, and Blue!). Each grade level will have a specific time to log on so that they can, in real time, talk to their classmates and teacher. This time will be shared prior to school starting. This will also be a critical time for students to hear about the lesson objectives of the week, assignments due, and to have fun communicating with their classmates.
Everyday Expectation - Every student must log on to his/her digital classroom (Seesaw or Google Classroom) and complete the attendance form prior to 2pm.
Mondays - Required classroom Zoom to keep connections with the entire class and teacher, and to get the lesson objectives for the week and assignments that will be due.
Tuesday/Thursday and Wednesday/Friday Remote Days - These days will allow parents and students flexibility in which they can help support their child at any time during the day because the lessons will be pre-recorded and available on Seesaw (PreK-2) and Google Classroom (3-6) along with the assignments and teacher feedback. The only time requirement on these days is that every student must log on to his/her digital classroom and click on the attendance form so attest that they are "in attendance" for the school day by 2pm. It is a state requirement that the school must take attendance every day. We will be practicing all of these procedures and processes with our students on the first day of school!
Since teachers will actively have students in their classrooms Tuesday-Friday; therefore making themselves unavailable for students learning remotely from home, there will be a set time for "office hours" via zoom and telephone in which teaching assistants and special education teachers will be available to help students and parents. You will be notified of these times as the school year begins.
Individualized Expectations - In order to provide a multi-tiered system of support for our students, your child's teacher/special education teacher/grade level Teaching Assistant may reach out to set up specific times with your child to hold small group Zoom meetings to support differentiated and individualized instruction as is needed.

Face Coverings - Basic Expectations
The topic of face coverings (masks) has been a part of our presentations as we have been preparing for the first days of school. The District's "Day in the Life" of a CSCSD student explains this in a fun way!
Mr. Anderson and Mrs. Proudfoot handed out the donated PTO face masks the first day of school. It was awesome to see how excited our students were!
For some basic expectations, please refer to the following general bullets below.
- Students will be expected to wear face coverings in all common areas and hallways.
- Students may take off a face covering when sitting at his/her seat in the classroom and cafeteria.
- Students and teachers must put on a face covering when working in small groups closer than 6 feet from one another as they interact with each other in the classroom.
- Teachers will help to prompt students when it is time to put on face coverings and also to take them off.

THE LAURA RICHARDSON HOUGHTON CORNING YOUTH CENTER PREPARES TO HELP YOUTH AND FAMILIES NAVIGATE THE NEW SCHOOL YEAR
CORNING, NY – September 4, 2020 – The Laura Richardson Houghton Corning Youth Center looks a little different right now. Since the 1980’s it has been a constant presence in the local community as a drop-in center for all youth during their after-school hours. Since early July, the Center has been able to re-open its door under the NY State COVID 19 guidelines for recreational programs.
Now, to best serve the community, the Laura Richardson Houghton Corning Youth Center will remain open for the foreseeable future from 8:00am-6:00pm daily for youth ages 8-18. This will allow youth, on days they are not attending in-person classes, to complete their virtual lessons and homework in a safe place with Youth Center staff providing a structured format. However, only a limited number of youth will be accepted into the program at this time in order to assure social distancing and safety guidelines. There is no charge for this enhanced programming.
Youth accepted to the program will take part in a structured school format at the Youth Center from 8:00am-2:30pm on days that they are not participating in in-person classes at their actual school building. Youth will be asked to bring their school-provided lunches on the days they are at the Center. An alternative location to the Youth Center will also be available, if needed, to host more students on their virtual learning days.
From 2:30pm-6:00pm, the Youth Center will offer a variety of activities including outdoor recreation opportunities, arts and crafts lessons, tutoring, and other special programming. The Kids Café will provide after-school snacks and dinner to all participants free of charge. The Youth Center will be accepting applications for just the afterschool drop-in center, as well, in compliance with NY State recreational program re-opening guidelines (based on space available).
Parents and guardians interested in signing up their children to take part in the Corning Youth Center’s new school year programming should submit an online registration form which can be found at www.familyservicesociety.org. Please call the Youth Center at 936-4116 with any questions.
