Gender Equality
Why aren't women payed more and treated better?
What I wanted to find out
It surprised me to learn that women weren't paid as much as men, only 77 cents for every dollar (Your Right to Equal Pay). I wanted to know why that was, as well as where it all started, and what it would do if we had equal wages.
Where did it start?
The first signs of gender inequality began in the 1800s, where women were not paid equally for working under dangerous conditions in factories. Since then, safety has definitely improved, but not salary. (Pic from ?)
What if women were paid more?
One of the main causes for inflation, or when money loses value, is having equal wages. This brought up more questions. What if men's were lowered to equal women's? That could possibly bring up more issues. All in all, it's more complicated than most think. (Pic from atthegrapevine.com)
What do men think about this?
58% of men are satisfied with the money they earn, and 61% are saving for retirement. Though, only 41% of women are happy with what they get, and 50% have started to save (Millennial Women... Less than Men). That being said, men are confident and satisfied with what they earn. Women are still unsure. (Pic from wikipedia)
My Big Question- Why are women paid less than men for working just as hard?
I found many answers....
Most of these connected with reasons why women weren't allowed to vote.
- Some women are considered less educated, and are thought of to not lead a job as well.
- Having females be equal could put men down and make them feel less superior
- Women simply don't have what it takes and don't deserve the money they work for
