Love & Logic Parenting Pointers
Last month, I shared that always saying NO to our children doesn't really give them an opportunity to learn from choices they make. Love and Logic parents believe in giving away a lot of control so that their kids actually make mistakes when the price tags for making those mistakes is affordable. Besides asking questions, using enforceable statements is another way to give control to our children. Enforceable statements are a way of saying no to one thing by saying yes to another without actually saying no. For example, instead of saying, "No, you can't play outside until your homework (or chores or whatever) is finished," you can say, "Of course you can play outside - just as soon as your homework is done." Kids hear the reward first and the contingency last. You can use empathy very easily when you deliver enforceable statements. I was at the nail salon recently and observed a perfect situation to use an enforceable statement. A teen-aged girl insisted on getting black nail polish even after her mom had repeatedly said
no. If that was a battle I chose to fight (but it isn't), I would have used this enforceable statement: "My money pays for any color of polish except black. Feel free to use your own money otherwise." It is very difficult for a child to argue against what you say you will do. It's easy for them to argue when you tell them what they are going to do or not do. Enforceable statements, just like questions, give away control so that you aren't always saying no and so your children can learn to think for themselves and make good decisions.Spring Portraits
Wednesday, March 7
While fall offers the traditional school picture appeal, Spring portraits offer a more fun and laid back approach. Students get the opportunity to show their individuality and create a look that is truly their own.
