A Montessori Environment Where Young Children Explore, Learn and Create
"We shall walk together on this path of life......" Maria Montessori
Dear ELC Families,
Happy November!
November brings us cooler temperatures, earlier nights, brighter mornings and LOTS of talk about turkeys, scarecrows and fall! The children are busy reading books about Thanksgiving, talking about friends and family and we are all looking forward to seeing everyone for our first family event in 2021.
Our ELC Thanksgiving Potluck Lunch on Nov. 18 from 11:00-1:00.
It will be in the back pavilion - park near the ELC and walk back with us - it is between Cary White and Gibbs. I need 2-3 parents to volunteer to come a little early to help get the tables ready and bring things to the pavilion.
Thank you to all of you who have already sent in your RSVP. A second flyer is at the end of this newsletter for you to print and return or you can just contact your child's teacher to let us know if you are coming, and if so, how many people are coming with you and what food you plan to bring to share with everyone.
Please let us know no later than Weds.
As always, please call or email with questions, and thank you for sharing your children with us,
Gail

November Family Focus - Gratitude
November is the month when we focus on giving thanks and gratitude.
Gratitude involves being sensitive and empathetic to others, and truly appreciating what others do for you. While children can quickly learn to say please and thank you, it takes time and guidance to help them truly learn to be grateful.
Gratitude has a strong presence in our Montessori classrooms - the ELC teachers model and practice gratitude and grace daily. It starts with our Practical Life lessons of Grace and Courtesy. Practical Life activities are one of the five areas of the Montessori prepared environment. These activities resemble activities in life and in the home, such as housekeeping, and include activities such as washing babies, sewing, preparing food, sweeping, and washing dishes. The purpose of these activities is to help the child learn self-control and start to see himself or herself as a contributing part of the social unit/family unit as a whole.
The children are specifically taught how to politely get someone’s attention, how to politely observe someone working and how to ask for help. These lessons are taught and reinforced multiple times each day in order to help the young child adapt to working within a group and to build his/her awareness of socially acceptable behavior.
“Teaching children to be grateful and show appreciation takes patience. Gratitude is a quality that needs cultivating over time. But encouraging children to be grateful and modeling its importance is well worth the effort as it lays the foundation for children to develop a positive, optimistic outlook on life.” North American Montessori Center posted 11/29/13
