WBMS Friday Notes
August 23rd
Reflections from Ms. Williams
WBMS Parents and Guardians –
Creating a strong partnership between home and school is extremely important and strengthens our overall community. We are all invested in guiding our students to be the best version of themselves they can be; and when we unite, we increase our chances of reaching that goal. I hope to see you all at our Curriculum Nights next Monday (6th grade) and Tuesday (7th and 8th grades) beginning at 6 PM. Our teachers are eager to meet you and share information about their classes.
Also, I encourage you all to join the WBMS PTA if you have not already (https://wbmspta.membershiptoolkit.com/). Our PTA was recently named a National School of Excellence, which was only awarded to one other PTA in Fulton county. This award-winning group supports our students and staff through many important academic and social programs. For those of you who can volunteer in our school, we welcome you! It is a fallacy that secondary schools no longer want parent involvement; on the contrary – we love when you are here! Furthermore, your students enjoy seeing you at school too (even if they don’t always show it). I realize many of you cannot physically join us during the day but hope you will stay connected through other means like Friday Notes, email, Twitter, School Governance Feedback, our school website, and evening events. Have a wonderful weekend with your families!

Wear Yellow Day- Sept 10th
WBMS Parents and Guardians,
In the Spring of 2018, I asked our PE and Health department to add two relevant topics to our WBMS programs – anti-vaping and mental wellness. I am proud WBMS was the first school in Fulton county to adopt these units focused on the well-being of our students. We partnered with Catch My Breath for the anti-vaping program and The LRJ Foundation for the age-appropriate mental wellness piece. LRJ brings in licensed professionals to our health classes every nine weeks to educate our students. Last year they worked with our students on the importance of healthy relationships, setting healthy boundaries, and instilling a positive mindset with empathy at the core. In the past they have also worked with our entire staff and hosted Parent University sessions for our parents. The 2019-2020 focus will be on overall mental wellness, specifically positive coping mechanisms, emotion regulation, and building healthy relationships. To kick off the program this year they are bringing in Wear Yellow Day on September 10th with a #BetterThanYesterday message. It’s a day to come together and wear yellow to spread awareness of mental wellness, kindness, and show support to one another. LRJ brings these programs to WBMS at no cost to our school but could use your support. Here’s how you can help: Engage social media by posting #BetterThanYesterday; purchase a #BetterThanYesterday T-shirt for $15 and wear it on September 10th, and/or Become a T-shirt Sponsor: $300 Sponsorship to place Logo/Name on back of T-shirt, if you own your own business. Orders due by 8/24.
