Volume 3, Issue 23 - February 28, 2020
The district 2019/20 calendar originally slated April 22 as a tentative flex half day of school. Just recently it was announced, however, that April 22 will now be a full day of school.
Secondly, as of now (if nothing changes), our final day of school for the 2019/20 school year will be on Wednesday, May 27th. This will be a full day of school (7:30-2:35 pm). Just wanted you all to be aware so you could plan accordingly.
Dates for Award Ceremonies will be shared in the next few weeks, as we confirm the last day of school.
7th/8th Track and Field to Begin on Monday, March 2
Into the Woods, Jr. Performance
"This Tony Award-winning musical includes many of your favorite characters: Cinderella, Little Red Riding Hood, Jack (and his beanstalk!), and of course the Witch – all who meet and interact in this whimsical & original show. Step into adventure as their different stories intertwine with each other when they all journey Into the Woods. The musical weaves together the tales of a baker and his wife who wish to have a child; Cinderella, who wishes to attend the king's festival; Jack, who wishes his cow would give milk; and Little Red Riding Hood who just wants to bring Grandma a few croissants! When the baker and his wife learn that they cannot have a child because of a witch's curse, the two set off on a journey to break the curse and wind up changed forever."
~Casting "Into the Woods" Company
Into the Woods, Jr. will be featured on the Gentry Middle School stage March 12-15! If you would like to join us for a fun evening (or matinee), tickets will be sold at the door for only $5 each. Each evening show (March 12th, 13th and 14th) will begin at 7:00 pm and last about an hour. Our matinee, and final show, will be held on Sunday, March 15th and is scheduled to begin at 3:00 pm. This Sunday matinee will be a non-ticketed performance, but donations are always welcome. As always, it is family friendly and promises to be an evening well spent watching Gentry’s finest young actors giving it all that they’ve got. Hope to see you there!

MAC Scholars
As we celebrate Black History Month, the MAC (Multicultural Achievement Committee) Scholars want to draw attention to some of the greatest historical figures throughout American history. "Katherine (Goble) Johnson was a human computer for NASA’s Langley Research Center, responsible for calculating, by hand, the math it would take to launch John Glenn into orbit in 1962. Katherine, along with the entire all-black female West Area Computing section of Langley, helped further the successes of space orbit and fueled the fire of competition between the U.S and the Soviet Union". It’s these Hidden Figures that the MAC Scholars aim to shine a spot light on, bringing their many amazing contributions to light.

Black History Mobile Museum
On Thursday, March 5, we are excited to have Dr. Khalid el-Hakim, the founder and curator of the Black History Mobile Museum, as a guest at Gentry. After teaching middle school for 15 years, Dr. el-Hakim founded the Michigan Hip-Hop Archive which opens on the Western Michigan University campus in 2020. He is bringing to Gentry his rich collection of artifacts that display the impact Hip Hop has had on popular culture and the impact popular culture has had on Hip Hop! All seventh grade social studies classes and chosen groups of 8th graders will have the opportunity to interact with his artifacts and discuss them with Dr. el-Hakim as examples of these four core values:
INTEGRITY: Being honest and doing the right thing, even when no one else is looking.
COURAGE: Being brave when facing difficult obstacles.
EXCELLENCE: Striving to do your best in all of your endeavors.
DETERMINATION: Making plans and being confident in meeting your goals.
Incoming 8th Grade Students Proof of Immunizations- Don't Delay!
The primary dose of the Tdap and Meningitis vaccines are generally administered to adolescents in the 6th grade (or between the ages of 11-12). It is a state REQUIREMENT that we obtain proof that your student has received the primary dose of both of these vaccinations PRIOR to their first day of 8th grade. If your student will be attending summer school as an incoming 8th grade student they will need to provide this proof PRIOR to starting summer school. Eighth grade students who have NOT provided us with this documentation will not be permitted to attend classes until this documentation is provided.
There is no need to wait! This documentation can be submitted to our nurse any time after your student receives these two vaccines. Providing this proof promptly will ensure that your student will be ready to start the 8th grade without delay.
