Coding Fun!
The STEM lab has been buzzing with cheering students because we have officially started our coding unit in all grades! Coding means writing the instructions for a computer to follow. Computers need to know instructions, one step at a time. There are also many different types of coding “languages” that programs use. To start the unit, students have been exploring what coding means and various vocabulary (programmer, bug, program, loop, algorithm, etc.). We also experienced “unplugged” activities and games to conceptualize coding concepts. Unplugged activities included The Animal Grid Game, Penguin Coding Algorithms, Code a Friend and Coding Reindeer! Students will soon be coding on small “robots” and even iPads!

Reminders
Recess in Winter Weather
Please be sure that you send your child to school dressed appropriately for the weather each day. Warm jackets, hats, and gloves are essential. Exercise is a vital part of your child’s day. Fresh air, exercise, and sunshine are essential for a healthy body and mind. We will make every effort for students to be outdoors for recess when temperatures and wind chill are above freezing. Please understand that as weather conditions change throughout the day we may transition from indoor to outdoor recess and vice versa.
Mount Pleasant Recreation Department
Each year our Mt. Pleasant Recreation Department offers after school clubs at Hawthorne. If your child will be attending a club, please do not forget to update School Dismissal Manager with those dates. You can register for clubs at https://www.mtpleasantny.com/recreation-parks-department.
