Team News
6th Grade
Our readers and writers have done a fabulous job this 9 weeks! We have written quick writes, reading responses, poems, and personal narratives. It is so much fun to read their writing and learn more about our awesome students. We are wrapping up Unit One of our Pearson reading program after analyzing memoirs, poems, narratives, and more. We loved having such a talented author visit and encourage all students to read at least thirty minutes nightly. We will be beginning Unit 2, "Natural Allies" next nine weeks. We have begun weekly vocabulary and stems, so studying ten minutes a night will help students to learn their words. They are encouraged to use words effectively in their writing and be able to identify and comprehend them in the context of their reading. Happy Fall to all our great students and parents!
For the second nine weeks in science, students will begin with a study of chemistry. We will learn about physical and chemical properties and changes, and observe chemical reactions. We will also work our way around the periodic table of elements, and we’ll learn the differences between atoms, molecules, compounds, and solutions. After we finish with chemistry, we will explore our solar system, as well as the history and future of space travel.
In social studies, sixth graders will wrap up their study of Latin America with a culture project. We will then continue our journey around the world by studying the geography, history and cultures of Europe.
In the 2nd nine weeks of math, we will have started our 3rd Module with ratios, rates, and percents. They will be able to convert from fractions to decimals to percents and learn how to write equivalent ratios and rates. After that, students will then move into computations of rational numbers and the coordinate plane for module 4. Students will learn how to work with negative numbers and understand the relationship between real life situations and positive/negative numbers.
7th Grade
7th graders have been very adventurous this fall! Texas history classes have been traveling
back in time to the Spanish Colonial era from 1680-1760 and the Mexican National era. This
past week, we traveled to the year 1821; Mexico has won independence from Spain, and Texas is now part of Mexico. Students will be learning about empresarios (such as Stephen F. Austin) who began colonization of Mexican Texas with settlers from the United States in Unit 3.
7th grade science students are gaining a deeper understanding of why cells are the basic unit of life. Students will be using the microscopes to delve further into cells. They'll wrap up the unit with a Cells Argument-Driven Inquiry Lab.
Math classes are beginning to study non-proportional linear relations. We will then move into
percentages. Please involve our mathematicians as you budget for your holiday shopping and take advantage of those great discounts!
It's time for expository writing in ILA. All on-level and Pre AP ILA students will be writing expository essays that answer our Essential Question for Unit 2 which is, “How do we overcome obstacles?” We will be reading different texts that will help them gather evidence and support for their essays. Students are encouraged to read outside of class to expand their writing skills and vocabulary. Parents, don’t be afraid to ask them what they are currently reading and share your own reading choices with them.
8th Grade
Math 8 students will be working on Proportional and Non-Proportional Relationships, Linear Functions, and Solutions to Systems of Equations. Algebra I students will be working on Sequences, Exponential Functions, and Systems of Equations and Inequalities. Geometry students will be working on Perimeter and Area of Plane Figures and Triangle Relationships.
U. S. History classes are wrapping up part 1 of our Revolution/Declaration of Independence Unit. Students are learning about the major events that lead to colonial unrest and the grievances listed in the Declaration of Independence. They know about the "Shot Heard 'Round the World" and are learning about the many significant people who influenced the American Revolution and became our country's founding fathers.
In ILA, our next unit of study will answer the essential question: What Can We Learn from the Past? We will explore events spanning from the Holocaust to the Civil Rights Movement, and discover how we continue to face this question in present day. In addition to various texts, videos, podcasts, etc. students will participate in literature circle discussions and book talks to demonstrate understanding. Finally, it is highly encouraged and expected that your child is doing independent reading for at least 30 minutes every night. With your child, continue to visit Canvas and HAC for agenda items, grades, and dates.

About the Fun Run
The Frisco Education Foundation Gary Burns Annual 5K & Fun Run is a fun run/walk and 5K certified race held at Toyota Stadium. Each year, the event features food, entertainment and other family-friendly activities, including a guest appearance by the City of Frisco Fire Clowns.
The event is named for former Frisco Assistant Fire Chief Gary Burns, who died of colon cancer in 1999. Burns was known for his support of students and often donated clothing, athletic equipment, money, meals and time to help less fortunate children in our community.
Proceeds from the Fun Run benefit scholarship opportunities for Frisco ISD students, including the Gary Burns Memorial Scholarship Fund, and innovative teacher grants that support teaching and learning in the classroom.
Each year, FEF partners with the City of Frisco Environmental Services Department to limit trash and encourage the use of recycle bins and compost containers during the Fun Run. The effort saves hundreds of pounds of recyclable and compostable materials from being diverted from the landfill.
