October counseling lessons covered coping skills and conflict management. Learning to self-regulate and solve “small” conflicts are important skills for all students to develop. In Kindergarten, we learned a new skill to use when we are feeling angry, frustrated, sad or upset. After reading Betty Spaghetti, the students learned how to tense and release different parts of their bodies in order to have a “spaghetti body”. Many students reported feeling more calm and relaxed, just like Betty.
Second, Third and Fourth graders discovered the difference between “play-doh” and “rock” problems. “Play-doh” problems are problems we have control over, while “rock” problems are problems we can’t change. When you have a “rock” problem, it’s important for students to learn to cope in a safe, healthy and respectful way. During this lesson we discussed and practiced many different coping skills. Ask your student what coping skills they liked best.
This article provides some additional ideas for helping children to self-regulate. https://childmind.org/article/can-help-kids-self-regulation/
First grade began learning about Kelso and conflict management. In their first Kelso lesson, first graders were introduced to Kelso’s choice wheel and taught the difference between small and big problems. Small problems are ones they are smart enough and strong enough to handle on their own. Big problems require going to a trusted adult for help.
