Principal's Corner
Dear Parents:
Our Husky community is saddened by the loss of our student, Jordan Phillips. A hard working student, talented musician and good friend to many, Jordan's memory will be constant in our hearts and minds. Our school community has come together to support Jordan's family, friends and all who are hurting at this tremendous loss.
I would like to thank all of our parents, counselors, teachers, community members, and the traumatic loss coalition members who assisted our Husky community in this difficult time. Most of all, I would like to thank our students who worked together to offer support to each other, who reached out to administration and counselors in an attempt to assist their peers and who demonstrated empathy for all members of our community.
Please continue to talk to your children and reach out to administration and counselors with any questions or concerns. We remain committed to the well being of our students and staff. Our Husky community is a strong and supportive environment because of your committment to the students of our high school.
Thank you,
Michele Ruscavage

Freshman Academy
The Freshman Academy Honorable Husky contest continues with students earning certificates for perfect attendance and making the honor roll. Students also have the ability to secure a chance in the competition by being recommended by their teachers. Two students will be selected in the coming months to win an iPad mini.
The freshman class council has been busy raising money to support our autism classes by selling pizza after school and a holding a star burst guessing game each day in the cafeteria.
Students in the Freshman Academy completed their series with Elevate Education when they met at the end of March to discuss ways to improve their study skills with memory mnemonics. Students participated in a series of activities to improve these skills. Please follow the link below to view the various activities.

April is Autism Awareness Month. About 1 in 68 children has been identified with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) according to estimates from CDC’s Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network. Autism is a developmental disability that can occur in all racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic groups. The causes of ASD are currently unknown. There are many factors that increase the chances of a child developing ASD. People with ASD have difficulty with social, emotional and communication skills. They might repeat certain behaviors and don’t like change in their daily activities. ASD causes those affected by the disability to have different ways of learning, paying attention, or reacting to things. ASD is diagnosed by observing the suspected child’s behavior and development. At present, there is not a medical test. Therefore, a parent may start to see behaviors or developmental progress that is not consistent with the child’s age. Parents or health care professionals may detect an issue at eighteen months, but a health professional diagnosis is more reliable by age two. If you are concerned and think that your child might have ASD, contact your child’s doctor and share your concerns. Speak with your child’s doctor about seeking a specialist such as a Developmental Pediatrician, Child Neurologist, Child Psychologist or Psychiatrist. These specialists will be able to do a more in-depth evaluation and make a diagnosis. There is no cure for ASD but early intervention can help improve children’s development. The services include therapy to help the child talk, walk, and interact with others. If your child is not yet 3 years old, contact your local early intervention system. You can contact The Early childhood Technical Assistance Center in your state. If your child is three years old or older, contact the public school system. The most important thing for a child who has autism spectrum disorder is to have a well-informed advocate, who can get them the resources they may need at very young age.

We are also starting the spring allergy season. If you are a victim of spring allergies you will start having the annoying symptoms such as runny nose, watery eyes, and fatigue. March begins the tree pollen season which lasts until June. April brings showers and the lovely blossoming flowers in addition to the growth of grass. These factors bring on allergy symptoms. It is time to keep an eye on the pollen count and discuss with your physician the best remedies for your allergy symptoms.
Art
On March 17th the visual art department took over 100 of our most talented art students to the Monmouth County Teen Arts Festival at Brookdale Community College. Our students happily explored the festival grounds and took in the inspiration, creativity, and talents of other Monmouth County teen artists. Students also participated in workshops throughout the day. Some students made ceramic empty bowls that will go to benefit the Soul Kitchen in Red Bank. Other students enjoyed video game design workshops, worked with recycled materials to create wearable fashions, or danced the afternoon away with professional Capoeira performers! The students also participated in an adjudication, hearing positive feedback and constructive criticism from a professional artist. As always, our students and faculty had a wonderful experience at the Monmouth County Teen Arts Festival and returned back to MRHS filled with new ideas, artistic visions, and a few special achievements. Congratulations to the following students who were recommended to participate in the Guild of Creative Art, Best of Monmouth County Teen Arts special exhibit: Victoria Zuppa, Angelina Germaine, and Lauren Welden.
Honeymoon in Vegas
Congratulations to the cast of Honeymoon in Vegas for coming in 1st place in Musical Theater at Monmouth County Teen Arts. The Cast will now be representing Monmouth County at the New Jersey State Teen Arts Festival on June 1st at Ocean County College. This is a great honor and we wish them well. Hopefully our cast will have more great news in May when the Count Basie nominations are announced!
Huskybots
The MRHS Robotics Team, the Huskybots, wowed the Matawan-Aberdeen Chamber of Commerce at their annual Business Expo on March 28th. The Huskybots showcased some of the abilities of their robots such as shooting balls into a basket, climbing up a table, and taking a bow. The demonstration was part of the Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA) and Huskybots joint efforts to develop a viable business sponsorship program to fund the robots on-the-road competitions. Both clubs would like to thank Mr. Hor for creating the new, edgier Huskybots logo. And yes, the very cool “RoboHusky” t-shirt is for sale!
