IT'S UNITED NATIONS WEEK AT JULIAN CURTISS!
The world celebrates United Nations Day every October 24th to honor the international organization promoting human rights, social progress, and world peace. Founding the United Nations right after the very tragic World War II meant a very important idea to be embedded in every nation – that is to achieve peace. Julian Curtiss traditionally celebrates this day on the Thursday right before or after October 24th and I cannot think of a better place to begin to achieve peace than in our own little school here in Greenwich, Connecticut.
This Thursday, October 25th at 1 pm Julian Curtiss will be engaging in our signature event - The United Nations Day Parade! We have been working on teaching our students the meaning of the The United Nations Personal Pledge Against Racism (shown below) and we will take the pledge together at the beginning of the Parade. We take the message of this event very seriously. We are a diverse school with 64 nations being represented in this year's parade. Many of these students are first and second generation Americans. If there is one event you attend this year it should be the UN Day Parade. It is truly an event filled with love and meaning.
Please spend some time discussing your heritage and background with your children prior to the parade. This day symbolizes our similarities and our differences, along with the fact that we come together everyday to learn and become friends. Students can wear traditional costume or the colors of the flag of the country they are marching with. If parents would like to come to school to help their children with costumes they should arrive around noon. Many people from the community including Town delegates will be attending the parade, as it is viewed an important event for all members of the Greenwich community.

A VERY SPECIAL THANK YOU
This event requires the hands of many and I would like to give a very special thank you to Martine Beijerman Bueller, mom of Zoe in 2G and Wolf in 1CS, as well as Jen Fry, mom of Max in 5O and Tessa in 2S for orchestrating this event. The PTA Presidents, Jessie Bennett and Bob Chaney, along the entire UN Committee have been working tirelessly to organize this event. Thank you to our PTA for their hard work and support! The support of these hard-working, dedicated volunteers make our school a better place for ALL of our students!
REMINDER - INTERNET SAFETY WORKSHOP
It has come to my attention that many of our young students are on social media and playing multiplayer online games. It is so very important that you know how this impacts your child and his/her safety.
Central Middle School will be hosting an Internet/Technology Safety Parent Workshop with Guest Speaker Katie Greer on Tuesday, October 30th from 7:00 - 8:30 pm in the CMS Auditorium.
Katie LeClerc Greer is the former Internet Safety Program Coordinator for the Massachusetts Attorney General’s Office, and former Intelligence Analyst for the Massachusetts State Police, where she was assigned to the Missing Children Clearinghouse. Her nationally recognized Internet/technology safety programs have been delivered to thousands of students, parents, school staff and law enforcement agencies around the country and have been featured in USA Today, Vanity Fair Magazine and on CNN.
If your child is on social media or plays games like Fortnite please attend this event.

SOCKTOBER
Each night in the United States, an estimated 600,000 people live on the streets. This October, we want to show that even a small act of love, such as donating a pair of socks, can make a big difference in the lives of our neighbors who are homeless.
During the month of October, the Julian Curtiss Service Club will be collecting new socks of all sizes (infant, child, and adult) to be given to local homeless shelters.
There will be a collection box at the end of the front hallway outside the gym until the end of the month.
Tell your friends and family - every pair helps!
