Greenville Splash Provides Free Lessons

Over one third of adults in the United States cannot swim the length of the pool.

Greenville Splash is changing that in our community!

We have 60 swimmers that have jumped into our adult learn to swim program and are overcoming their fear to learn a lifesaving skill. These swimmers are so determined to succeed. They get pumped up after every skill they learn! The excitement around the pool is one of pride and sense of accomplishment. We have swimmers learning to float, kick, swim and tread water for the very first time! There really is nothing better than teaching someone a skill and sharing your love of the water and our wonderful sport. Our sixteen fabulous volunteers are: Leah Aragon, Barbara Barber, Amy Browning, Allan Byer, David Hall, Doug Long, Mark Kothe, Carolyn Moore, Casey Oliver, Melissa Patterson, Judi Rich, Leslie Scott, Allyson Seitzer, Tyler Sites, Claire Walker, and Kim Williams.

Thank you to Westside Aquatic Complex for hosting this program at their facility!

Dan O'Connell Swimmer of the Month

We are proud to recognize Dan O'Connell as swimmer of the month! Dan has been swimming with us for the past two years after moving here from New York. Dan loves to compete in triathlons all over the world. About 8 years ago he saw a lot of folks getting vanity license plates and he started wondering what would he write on his. So he thought by the time he aged up to the 70-74 group he might have a chance to qualify for Kona. So he set his goals and got the license plate ordered. He kept that plate and the dream alive for many years and even took it with him to Ironman Texas a few weeks ago. Dan thought he might have a shot at winning his age group and qualify for Kona, so the pressure was on. Dan breezed through the swim and was in first place. After a windy bike course the only thing he could think of was getting off the bike. As he started the run, he realized he may still be in first place, no problem, I just need to keep running and not walk for 26 miles. He says he can rationalize anything during pain! Well thanks to a girl in a bikini top waving him on on the run loops, he was able to persevere the long, difficult marathon. Dan found out later that night that he was indeed the age group winner. He was beyond ecstatic and took that license plate right up there with him when he got his award. Dan is such a pleasure to have on our team. Make sure to get the full story from Dan, next time you see him at workout. Keep those dreams alive!

Splashing Accomplishments

SCAR Open Water Swim, Arizona

Casey Oliver trained her butt off for the past 6 months and inspired everyone with her dedication. She set out to do the 17 mile swim, but after 13 miles (7.5 hours) the race was called off. The headwinds were brutal the entire way with gusts over 20 mph. The kayakers got separated from the swimmers and it was unsafe to continue. Casey you made everyone proud and this is still a huge accomplishment in the open water world!

United States Masters Swimming Short Course Nationals

John Decker and Bob McAdam competed at the USMS Nationals in Riverside, California. Both of them crushed all of their times all weekend long! John placed 7th 1650 free and dropped 35 seconds, 10th 1000 Free, 13th 500 Free, 12th 200 IM, 10th 400 IM and 6th 200 fly. Bob placed 9th in 100 breast, 7th 200 breast, 9th 400 IM
