WHAT'S HAPPENING AT BLE

We hope you will join us with your children for coffee, juice, milk and donuts from 8:30 - 9:00 in the school gym.
The AR Assembly will start at 9:30 for primary grades and 10:00 for intermediate grades.

MATH SURVEY
The Mat-Su Borough School District reviews core curriculum in a six-year cycle. This year, we reviewed middle school math materials and a committee selected enVision Math and Ready Math as the top two choices. We would like your input in the final selection process. Please review the programs and take the survey by clicking the appropriate links below. You may also review the programs in person and provide input by attending a Materials Open House at the MSBSD Administration Building on January 16 from 10am to 6pm. The survey will close Wednesday, January 22 at 4PM. Below is the link
ACTIVITIES
GIRLS ON THE RUN
Girls on the Run is returning to Big Lake Elementary this spring. Practices will be held every Monday and Wednesday from 3:45 – 5:15 pm from February 24 thru May 9 (date of the 5k). Girls in grades 3, 4, and 5 may begin registering for the program on February 1st. Registration closes on March 1st. Please visit www.gotrsouthcentralak.org to register your girl. The standard cost of this 10 week program is $150 per girl which covers the cost of the curriculum, t-shirts, water bottles, 5k registration, snacks, and other lesson materials. VOLLEYBALL
GIRLS WHO CODE
The Girls Who Code club is an opportunity for girls, grades 3rd, 4th, and 5th, to learn about the world of computer science and programming, while creating their own code projects. The girls will work to complete different projects on the computer and hands-on practicing a variety of skills such as critical thinking, perseverance, teamwork, and problem solving. We will meet Tuesday and Thursday mornings from 8:00-9:00 starting January 28 until March 5 in Ms. Durbin's classroom.

- Mondays: kindergarten & 5th graders (until February 24)
- Tuesdays: 1st & 4th graders (until February 25)
- Wednesdays: 2nd & 3rd graders (until February 26)
GREAT KINDNESS CHALLENGE JAN 27-31
Kindness Matters! Join the students of Big Lake Elementary in promoting kindness. Our school is joining schools from around the world in the 2020 Great Kindness Challenge. The students and their families are challenged to perform as many acts of kindness as they can during the week. Classes will be discussing kindness and friendship daily and encouraging your children to be kind to everyONE, everyDAY. The challenge includes a checklist of possible kind acts. The Great Kindness Challenge has a school version and a family version.

LIBRARY NOOK
We have reviewed book care and expectations again. I've seen an increase in damaged and stained books being returned. Students will need to replace or pay for badly damaged or lost books by the end of the school year.
Remember you can check your child's account through the online catalog link on the student tab. User ID and password are their student number (no initials).

MUSIC NOTES
COMBINED ELEM/MIDDLE/HIGH SCHOOL CONCERT FEB 26
Combined Band Concert Feb 26 @ 6:30pm @ Houston Jr/Sr High.
Big Lake Elementary Band students will participate in this unique concert with middle and high school students. BLE Band students need to be dressed in their concert attire (any combination of black and white) and arrive by 6:00PM with their instrument and music at Houston Jr/Sr High School on Feb. 26. Come join us for a great night of music!
NURSE RX
HEALTH SCREENINGS
Student health screenings continue at Big Lake Elementary. Components of the health screening are height and weight, blood pressure, vision, hearing, dental, and posture assessment on 5th grade girls. No information will be sent home unless the student is referred for a dental, vision or hearing screening. Please follow up with your health care provider if you see a referral.
DONATIONS
The nurse is looking for donations of sweat pants, only sweat pants. Boys large, Husky large, and XL. Thank you.
WINTER GEAR
WINTER CLOTHING: Students go outside until 10 below.
Please make sure they have their snow pants, a warm coat, boots, gloves, and hat.
