A Note from Dr. Brown
Greetings Parents and Guardians!
Thank you so much for a wonderful week. I wanted to share some important information about attendance. Please see below:
Showing up for school has a huge impact on a student’s academic success starting in kindergarten and continuing through high school. Research shows that students who are chronically absent, even as early as elementary school, are less likely to graduate from high school than their peers. Although some absences are unavoidable, we know that when students miss too much school— regardless of the reason – it can cause them to fall behind academically. When students are not at school, they are missing valuable instructional time.
There are some reasons that your child should stay home from school, such as a fever, vomiting/diarrhea, or a positive COVID test. See here for other health reasons to keep your child home. When this happens, please write a note or email to your child's teacher and/or provide a doctor's note upon return to school to have these absences excused. Keep in mind, if your child has a headache, stomachache, or mild cough, he/she may still come to school.
Here are some things you as a parent can do to help improve your child’s attendance:
Talk with your child about what happened at school each day. The more interested in school you are, the more they will be!
Set a bedtime and morning routine so that your child is well-rested and ready for school.
Wait to take family trips until school holidays or summer break.
Schedule medical appointments after school or first thing in the morning so that students do not miss an entire day.
If you have questions about your child's attendance, or need support improving your child's attendance, please reach out to our counseling department.
Have a wonderful weekend,
Dr. Brown

Honesty is an important character trait for our students to learn as they grow into trustworthy citizens. Teachers will be looking for students that exhibit this trait during November to be recognized as the “Cub of the Month” with a certificate and free ice cream!
Brrrr! It's Getting Cold Out There!
The cold weather came quickly this year! A generous community partner has donated some coats for our students who may need them. If you are unable to purchase a coat for your child and need one, please reach out to your counselor.
SEL Parent Night
Thank you to everyone that participated in the Social Emotional Learning Parent Night on Tuesday, November 1st. We are so thankful that we were able to share some of the things that our students are learning in school each day. Please visit www.casel.org to learn more about about SEL, and how to incorporate it at home. Spotlight on Native American Heritage Picture Books
Fry Bread by Kevin Noble Maillard
This bright picture book invites kids to cook with a Native American grandma. Kids of all races carry flour, salt, baking powder, and other supplies into the kitchen to make dough for fry bread. Flour dusts the counter as oil sizzles on the stove. Veggies, beans, and honey make up the list of toppings, and when the meal is ready, everyone is invited to join the feast. Community love is depicted in this book as its characters gather on Indigenous land across the continent, indoors and outdoors, while making art or gazing at the night sky.
Beanstack
Our school-wide Beanstack training continues into November! Beanstack is an online digital reading program provided to all GCPS schools. Students are encouraged to log their reading minutes while working to meet challenges.
For now, the Fall Into Reading 2022 challenge will be in place as we continue to train students on using this digital platform. Students will login to Beanstack using their GCPS student number and their birthday month and date (MMDD) as their password. Students are able to log reading minutes either on their laptop or on a mobile device.
Refer to the media center link of the school website for helpful resources to get your child started with Beanstack. Contact Jennifer.Alden@gcpsk12.org if you have any questions about this digital reading program.
