Course Description
If you are looking for ways to focus on learning and how to create better learning experiences for students, The Illinois Standards, Assessment and Grading (SAG) Institute is perfect for you and your team. Come spend two days with our team of experts to help your school/district move forward with how to best ensure high levels of learning for ALLstudents in ALL schools. Our internationally recognized presenters have extensive knowledge in all of these critical areas and this institute will allow you to better understand how all elements of Standards, Assessment and Grading systematically flow together to create better learning structures for today's students. Our team of presenters will customize your learning experience at this institute by sharing their research, knowledge and implementation strategies on best practices in all of these crucial areas. Engage in this process with colleagues on the following critical questions that must be asked to ensure high levels of learning for all students and to create a Learning FIRST culture within our schools.
- What type of learning environment do we strive to create in becoming a Learning FIRST school?
- What are the most important and critical standards and targets our students must learn?
- What types of assessments (both formative and summative) will we use to have our students demonstrate they are proficient in what they need to know?
- What approaches to learning will help our students experience success?
- What is our collective response to our students when they are not learning what is essential?
- How do we best utilize our existing resources to support professional learning for our staff?
Course Outcomes
Participants who attend this institute will be able to: (not limited)
- understand how standards and learning targets align to assessments in all grades and content areas.
- learn how to create strong formative assessments to help guide our instructional practices.
- learn how to align curriculum, assessment, and grades that more accurately reflect student learning.
- understand the process of making the transition to a standards referenced and proficiency based reporting structure at all levels.
- learn how to immediately fix some of the broken grading structures that are currently happening in our schools everywhere.
- understand the importance of collaboration in both the design of common formative assessment and the analysis of the data.
- gain the skills to turn traditional lessons/plans into standards-based lessons that focus on what is most critically important for our students to know and do.
- understand the role of feedback in the classroom and how to engage in consistent feedback practices.
- understand the role that creating a culture of learning has on making significant school improvement.
- learn how to grade smarter against standards and not necessary harder.
- develop an understanding of effective approaches to homework, late work and retesting.
- gain the necessary knowledge and skills to accurately grade against content standards.

- understand some of the misconceptions about grading practices, and identify how to make grades meaningful and motivating.

8:00 am to 3:00 pm
District will pay staff registration.
How many Internal University credits will I receive if I attend this course?
1 Internal University credit will be presented to all who successfully complete the course requirements.
What is the cost for those who want to attend for Internal University credit?
$110 per person
How many CPDUs will I receive?
16 hours of CPDUs will be available
Can I get paid an hourly rate if I want to attend but don't want Internal University credit?
Staff choosing not to receive Internal University credit will be paid $14 per hour for each of the 16 hours of course requirements.
What are the requirements of the course?
For staff to receive full credit and payment, they will need to attend both days of the training and write a 750-word plan for how they will use the information learned using the "3I's" Format:
- Information Describe specific information (facts) gained from attending the 2-day conference
- Insights Describe new insights (thoughts and feelings) you have on the topic based upon the new knowledge gained
- Implications Describe the implications this 2-day event and new knowledge has had on your future practice as an educator
