Glenealy School Newsletter
12th September 2018
Message from Brenda
Dear Parents, Caregivers and Students,
Thanks to the PTA for hosting a fantastic BINGO evening last week. Everyone had a super time and loved the fun and family atmosphere, and of course winning some of the wonderful prizes too!
I look forward to seeing you at the PTA drinks and AGM Evening on Thursday 27th September. This is always a fun social event and a great way to celebrate the accomplishments of the PTA, the School and the Glenealy Community. More details will follow in the PTA section.
Weather Warnings
Many of you will be aware that it appears that a super typhoon may hit Hong Kong over the weekend and possibly into Monday. Please keep yourself informed through the local media. We will post a banner on our school website’s front page if there is going to be any disruption to the school day. Remember, when going onto the website, please refresh your browser so you can access the latest information. General procedures for inclement weather can be found on our school website here.
Social and Emotional Learning (SEL)
Our SEL assembly this week focused on what happens when relationships go wrong!
We explored a variety of incidents and found that they fall into 4 different categories.
When something happens by accident (e.g. someone accidentally bumps into you)
When someone is being rude (e.g. someone isn’t showing you respect i.e. by cutting into the line or shouting at you)
When someone is being mean (e.g. someone is purposely doing things to make you feel unhappy or angry)
When someone is bullying you (see below for further details)
In our Positive Relationship Policy we define bullying as:
An ongoing misuse of power in relationships through repeated verbal, physical and/or social behaviour that causes physical and/or psychological harm. It can involve an individual or group misusing their power over one or more persons. Bullying can happen in person or online, and it can be obvious (overt) or hidden (covert). Bullying of any form or for any reason can have long term effects on those involved including bystanders.
Single incidents and conflicts or fights between equals, whether in person or online, are not defined as bullying. However, these conflicts still need to be addressed and resolved.
Please see this reading for further explanation. It is important that we all understand the difference between these types of behaviours. I have noticed recently that students and some parents will often use the word bullying when it is a one-off incident where someone is being mean or rude. Please help your child understand the difference and we will too. As noted in the Positive Relationship Policy, we take all of these incidents seriously and follow up accordingly.

Family Bingo Night – thanks to all!
Thanks to everyone who came to our Family Bingo Night – it was a fun evening presided over by our Star Caller, Mr Phil Sangster, and superbly run by our willing and friendly volunteer team. To all those who planned and organised, helped on the night, and donated cookies, cakes, crisps and treats, you were brilliant – thank you. Sincere thanks to Bookazine and our new sponsors (see below) for their donations of fantastic prizes. As well as being a great night out, we raised over $16,000 for the rooftop playground project – well done Glenealy!
