RMS Wildcat Weekly
May 15th, 2020 Information for our Families
Happy Friday!
Greetings Wildcat Families,
With only a few weeks left of virtual school, students and teachers are working on completing projects and assignments and preparing for the end of the year. Some students and parents received notifications this week regarding grades. Please remember that this notification is to let students and parents know that students are in danger of receiving a "no credit" grade, but this is not yet a final grade or determination. Students still have time to submit work and to complete assignments so that they can receive credit for this semester. Please continue to communicate with teachers to ensure we are working together to support our students in getting credit for their classes.
Our RMS team is working on plans for an 8th grade promotion that will honor and celebrate our 8th graders who are moving on to high school next year. I have a graduating senior myself, so I know how difficult it is for our students to not have the traditional celebrations that they have been anticipating. The silver lining is that the video we create will be a wonderful keepsake that they can watch for years to come to remember this unique experience and to reminisce about their years at Roosevelt. The Class of 2020 truly is special! As part of our celebration, we are blessed to have a generous and awesome PTA who is sponsoring promotion t-shirt gifts for every 8th grader this year! We appreciate their thoughtfulness and all the hard work that they put into fundraising this year, which makes this possible.
As we near the end of this school year, we are now considering what the fall might bring. As Dr. Doyle shared in his most recent Community Update #13, we are beginning to plan for multiple scenarios since there is uncertainty about what restrictions and guidelines might be in place in August. I know it doesn't help that we have more questions than we have answers, and I would venture to say that the majority of us are feeling this frustration in all areas of our lives right now, but I am pleased that we are moving forward with plans. This includes gathering feedback from our parents to help inform these possibilities. If you haven't done so, please click to provide your valuable input: Fall 2020 Hybrid Instructional Program Community Survey
To answer more of your questions, and to give us an opportunity to connect, I will be hosting another Virtual Coffee with the Principal. Details are below. I hope you can join in, and if you can't, please continue to reach out with questions, suggestions, or needs. Stay safe and healthy and positive! We are in this together, and as always, I am so grateful to part of this wonderful community!
Sincerely,
Heather Golly
Virtual Coffee with the Principal
Though we can't meet in person, I want to provide families with an opportunity to connect with administration and counseling so that we can address questions, concerns, and needs. I am hosting a "Virtual Coffee with the Principal" Zoom meeting on Friday, May 22nd, at 8:30 am.
Check your email for the meeting ID and password!
Happy International Day of Families to all our AMAZING Wildcat Families!

PTA

The PTA is proud to sponsor promotion t-shirt gifts for every 8th grader, to acknowledge their accomplishments and celebrate that they are promoting out of Middle School and into High School. We recognize the sadness of not being able to celebrate in person and hope this small memento might make this feel a little bit more special. Congratulations to all of our 8th graders!

Grading Update:
During Roosevelt Virtual School, teachers will continue to provide feedback on student performance and mastery of content and skills. Grades will be recorded as they were during the regular school year as a means of providing feedback to parents and students. At the end of the semester, teachers will take into consideration all work completed in the second semester from January to June, as well as each student’s individual circumstances, to determine whether credit or no credit has been earned. Teachers will be emailing you by May 15th to notify you if your student is in danger of receiving a "no credit" grade.

Live Conferencing Update:
Teachers may decide to host live conferences on Google Meet/Zoom with their classes to check-in, provide instructions and support for the week’s assignments, and connect with their classes.
Participating teachers who host live conferences will hold a morning and afternoon session on their assigned subject day. Both sessions will be similar, so students may choose to attend one or both of the sessions. See the SCHEDULE HERE on page 2 of our Norms and Schedule document.
The morning and afternoon sessions are open to students from all periods.
Sessions may be extended or shortened depending on the needs of students in session.
Participating teachers will post a link and instructions for joining live conferences in their Google Classrooms.
Students are expected to follow the behavior guidelines detailed in our Roosevelt Live Distancing Norms for any live conferences.

General News
PE Lockers & Items Inside: This is one of the questions we are getting the most. Currently, the County of San Diego Public Health Order does not consider access to student items in PE Lockers part of the "critical" aspect of schools. The VUSD is aware of PE Locker item concerns, and our families are not the only ones asking. Stay tuned!
Students may still be receiving overdue notices from our automated library system. Please know that students will not accrue fines while school is not in session. Information about when and how to return library books, textbooks, and Chromebooks will be coming soon. If you have any questions, please email Deanna Bennet at deannawestphal@vistausd.org or call 760-472-3375.
Yearbook is complete and looks amazing! Our yearbook was completed in early March and already sent for printing. Families can still purchase the yearbook online:
Purchase directly through our publisher at www.jostens.com. Make sure to enter our school information in the prompt and select "yearbook". Price: $50
This year, there are only a limited amount of yearbooks for sale. As of April 17, there are only about 100 yearbooks remaining for purchase. As of right now, it is not clear how yearbook distribution would take place; however, families will certainly receive a copy if they make a purchase.
Thank you for supporting our award-winning yearbook program and the amazing staff who have worked tirelessly to complete this year's book. If you have any questions/concerns, please contact the Yearbook Advisor Mr. Daniel Guerzon at DanielGuerzon@vistausd.org.
7th Grade "Family Life/Sex Ed": At this point it looks like the state of California will postpone compliance with the state-mandated Family Life/Sex Ed curriculum for this year. We anticipate picking it up as part of 8th Grade Science.

We are looking for students to show some extra grit, perseverance, and determination as they work to finish the year strong and successful!
