Bulldog Bulletin
New Britton Elementary - December 2, 2016
Principal's Message
Dear Bulldog Families,
As the daylight hours grow shorter and we begin the month of December, it is time for a mid-point check to assess student growth. Our students will be taking web-based NWEA assessments over the next few weeks. Teachers will also be administering our Fountas and Pinnell Guided Reading Level Assessment to measure growth in your student’s instructional reading level. The purpose of these assessments is to measure student growth in reading and math and to determine areas of strength and needed instruction. The teachers will use this information as they plan learning opportunities for the 3rd 9 weeks and beyond.
These are just two examples of formative assessments that we use to measure academic growth and achievement. There are many other ways our students show what they know and can do regarding topics of study. Teachers compile a variety of assessment data for a more comprehensive picture of your student that is available through our report cards. Student report cards will be available on Skyward Friday January 6th. As always, please be sure to communicate with your student’s teacher if you have any questions.
Thank you for partnering with us in education. Have a great weekend!
Sincerely,
Lori Mankin

Science Fair Kickoff with Professor Steve - SUCCESS!

December can be a very fun, festive and somewhat frazzled month. Below are some helpful tips for the month:
- Remind your students that school does not end until winter break starts which for NBE is December 16. The teachers at NBE have a lot of learning to pack in these last few days. Insist that your student keep up the regular school routine including bedtime routine.
- In regards to sticking to the same routine, try to do the same thing with eating healthy foods, exercising, and general health issues. Keeping with the routine will keep those pesky illnesses away.
- Plan to do something together like driving around to check out holiday lights, bake something sweet, start a large puzzle, and/or start to read a book that the whole family would enjoy.
- Help your children focus on someone other then themselves. Find some activity that your family can be involved in that would help those less fortunate.
- Explain the meaning of holiday or family traditions and why they are special. What are your family traditions? Don’t have any, then this is the year to start one.
- Learn about what a different culture does during this time of the year or another time of year that is celebrated. Compare and contrast how it is different from your family celebrations or traditions.
- If your circumstances are different this year then last year you can always start a new tradition.
- Give yourself the gift of understanding. You can’t do it all. You may try and come really close, but then it may also come at a cost – financially, physically, and emotionally. Having a happy and relaxed, but scaled down festive season can be just as much fun.
