1•5•10 Community Newsletter School Year 19: Issue 5
Welcome September!
August was a very successful and exciting month at Bryan County Middle School. We launched a successful school year and scholars and moving and grooving now.
HUGE congratulations are in order for Ms. Sunny Beasley! Ms. Beasley is our ELITE 2018 Bryan County Middle School Teacher of the Year! We were able to surprise and honor Ms. Beasley in front of our whole schoolhouse by having her son come out and talk to us about what it means to be a BCMS Scholar! Ms. Beasley was SO shocked! It was truly a #ProudPrincipal moment for me!
Fall map data has been sorted and scholars have set goals for themselves as they begin to grow and become better readers. If you are interested in understanding more about MAP data and how to support your child, please contact us.
This is our HOMECOMING week! We are excited to partner with BCHS to participate in dress up days. We will also host our own Homecoming game on Thursday night. A new change for Homecoming this year is our addition of "Kindest Redskin" for our Homecoming Celebration. We will honor one boy and one girl from each grade level who were chosen by their classmates as THE Kindest Redskin. This Redskin exemplifies everything it means to be a #BeBCMS Redskin: Be Respectful, Courteous, Manage YOUR behavior, and Strive for ExExExCellence. The Kindest Redskins will be announced Tuesday morning. We will honor the Kindest Redskins at Halftime of the Football game Thursday! We are excited about this change for Middle School and hope that it promotes a culture of what really matters: KINDNESS!

#ReadersAreLeaders (The 5) WIN!
WIN time Works!
How you can support WIN time at home:
We are proud to offer WIN time daily to our scholars to grow a culture of readers!
1. Encourage reading at home!
2. Help your child find a great book
3. Go to the library
4. Get on your iBooks and download samples of some classics! I just downloaded James and the Giant Peach by Ronald Dahl!
5. Do a read aloud together!
We can't wait for you to see our NO STRINGS ATTACHED reading inside our #LittleFreeLibraries
If you have books to donate, please bring them to the main office!

Notes from Ms. Raeburn (The 10)
Thank you to all our parents and families who attended our first Parent University of the school year! We had our BEST turnout EVER at BCMS and I was proud to show off the elite work that is happening in our classrooms! We will have our next Parent University in November! Stay tuned for details on that!
The peeks of the week are listed under our "weekly updates" tab on our website. We hope you are finding this information helpful in keeping up with the day to day of your child and what they are doing at school.
A serious topic that I want to talk about this week is the new issue we have popping up in our schoolhouse: Vaping. Vaping has become quite the trend in middle schools and high schools across the county and I believe awareness is the key. Back in January I was clueless about vaping. I had no idea what it was or what it looked like. I went to put clothes away in my son's room from Christmas and found a box that looked like a pack of gum as well a long black thing that looked like a flash drive. I neatly organized it on his dresser. Fast forward to a few months later when I learned what it was. Lucky for me, I caught it early, had some great, but hard conversations with my son. There were lots of tears, and certainly some consequences, but looking back I am so thankful for that experience. We have to use these times as learning moments for our children. It is important to always remind them that we love them and help to guide and support them to make good decisions.
Vapes are dangerous. It can (and does!) happen to anyone and we have to educate ourselves on it to help our scholars make smart decisions when it comes to this very dangerous, addictive, habit. Please take a look at the pictures below to get a good idea about what a vape is. I have also included some articles to help educate yourself on it.
If you have any questions about vapes or vaping, please feel free to contact us.
Other #BeBCMS Nuggets:
E+R=O
I hope you have noticed the posters and visual reminders around our school. E+R=O is a simple skill. The E stands for the event (what happened), the R stands for how your responded (your action) and the O stands for the Outcome (what did you get). We are helping our scholars to think about E+R=O in every situation. Our goal is to help our scholars begin to see and understand that the better their R is, the better their O will be!
PLEASE sign up to use Powerschool. PowerSchool is our grading and information communication system. Sign up is EASY! Stop by the front office and we will get you signed up and get you a login. You can use it on your phone and from an app! Never wonder again about missing work, upcoming work, or grades! It's all at your fingertips in Powerschool!
Homecoming is very early this year! We have Homecoming Dress Up Days ready to roll out! We want everyone to come out to our Homecoming Game Thursday September 6th and our Varsity Homecoming game Friday September 7th
Also new this year: Each class will have a "Kindest Redskin" class representative for the game. Voting will be done in classes and the selected Kindest Redskins will be announced on Tuesday September 5th.
Thank you for being proactive and for supporting our school and our passion work! I am proud to be your principal and would love to hear from you! Please know that if you have a concern or if you hear something that doesn't feel right, contact me! eraeburn@bryan.k12.ga.us or 912-626-5050 or 912.255.0630 (Cell).
