8th Grade Career Cruising 4 Year Planning
8th-Grade STEAM Families,
High School 4 Year Plans are underway! Students were presented with high school endorsement options as well as sample plans through College and Career Readiness as well as AVID. All 8th graders attended the CTE Elective Showcase at their zoned high school in November, providing them with a great opportunity to explore their areas of interest.
Each 8th-grade student has or will have visited with Mrs. Harrison regarding their individual plan before submitting their plan (March 9th is the final day to submit).
Parents will not need to "sign-off" on students chosen courses; therefore, it is imperative that you work through the resources provided to make the best decision for your student.
Both CHS and BHS Counselors will visit with our 8th graders to discuss high school classes prior to submission. BHS/CHS Counselors will visit at the end of February and beginning of March.
There will be nights designated to families in the Spring to go further in depth about BHS and CHS.
Students applying to BCHS will still need to complete courses through Career Cruising.
Please remember that course requests are final and will be used for next year's scheduling purposes (9th grade only).
Please review the Action Items below:
ACTION ITEM 1: COURSE REQUESTS
Students need to log into CareerCruising.com to complete their 4 Year Plan. Please note that Mrs. Harrison will meet with each student to discuss courses. High school counselors will visit to look-over plans as well.
4 Year Plans will need to be “submitted” through CareerCruising.com the week of March 5-9th.

STEAM Tutoring Schedules
Use this link for the most up-to-date tutoring schedules!
What are the benefits of tutoring?
- Tutoring offers individual and structured learning
- Develops a rapport between teacher and student, allowing for a more meaningful connection to material
- Enhances student's performance and growth
- Creates a positive attitude toward the subject
- Encourages self-directed learning
- Allows for practice in the related subject area without the risk associated in a classroom setting
- Improves self-esteem
Students are encouraged to attend a tutoring time that best meets their schedule.
This means that if a teacher does not offer tutoring at a time that works for the student, they may attend an alternate teacher's tutoring session for that subject.
Please reach out to your student's teacher if there are special circumstances.

A Note from Nurse Shields
Don’t Let the FLU Sneak Up on YOU!
As reported on Monday, Jan 9th by CBS, The Texas Department of Public Health states that one of the hardest hit areas in the county is the 76028 zip code (Burleson) and 76140 zip code (Kennedale.) See the News story in its entirety here.
In order to get through this Flu season without illness, please remember the following:
PLEASE keep your children at home if they have been diagnosed with the flu or have flu-like symptoms!! ALL students must be FEVER FREE for 24 hours WITHOUT fever-reducing medications (Tylenol or Motrin) before they can return to school.
Educate your children about the importance of handwashing (not just using sanitizer) several times throughout the day, before and after using the restroom, before eating, etc.
Do NOT allow your child to share food or drinks with anyone else… including you!
For more information on symptoms of the flu and ways to prevent the virus, please visit the Centers for Disease Control’s dedicated flu information site here.
If your child contracts the flu or you feel that he or she may have the flu, call your doctor immediately so they can prescribe a medication that may shorten the length and severity of the virus. Please call the front office at STEAM, 817-245-1500 and let us know your child will be absent due to flu and/or flu-like symptoms.
If you have any questions or concerns about the Flu, feel free to call my clinic at 817-245-1510 or email me at Brittney.Shields@bisdmail.net

Teacher Contact
Communication is key in any working relationship. Stay up-to-date with your student's academics through the STEAM, individual teacher, and BISD websites as well as weekly grade level newsletters.
Who should you contact first in the event clarification is needed regarding your child?
Your child's teacher(s).
Our facilitators know your student and care about their success. If you have questions regarding assignments, behavior, or specific events, reach out to them.
Use this link to find individual teacher emails.
Dress Code
We frequently perform dress code checks, please ensure that your student is always in compliance, click here for middle school dress guidelines.
On the occasion, we offer students high school dress days. In the event that we do, please follow such guidelines, click here.
Attendance Policy
Attendance is of utmost importance. When students are absent, not only do they miss out on direct instruction but also they have assignments that begin to pile up. While sometimes being absent is unavoidable, especially if a student has a fever or doctor's orders to stay home, if at all possible make sure they attend every day.
In Texas, students are required to attend school no less than 90% of the time or to be absent no more than 17 days. When students pass 17 days of absences (EVEN excused with a doctor's note and partial absences) they are subject to loss of credit. Loss of credit means that they will not be given credit for courses.
We understand that sometimes absences are unavoidable but, if a student is in any way able to come to school it is important that they attend.

TRUST Cards
Click here to view our STEAM Trust Card-Level Requirements.
Remember, at the end of each six weeks, we will review daily attendance, grades, discipline referral, and tardy data by-student to determine who qualifies for each of the three levels of trust cards. Then, according to the data, new trust cards will be issued each six weeks.
Level 1 Blue Trust Card contains 6 privileges. Level 2 Red Trust Card contains 12 privileges. Level 3 Platinum Trust Card contains 17 privileges. Again, these privileges can be redeemed from any STEAM staff member throughout a six weeks. Use them because you have earned them by your hard work in showing respect, taking responsibility, embodying excellence, having an amiable attitude, and making a difference! Also, ask your teachers how you can earn back privileges that you have already redeemed.
Students who receive a Positive Office Referral will automatically obtain a Platinum Trust Card for six weeks.
Click here to view descriptions for our Trust Card privileges.
Remember to wear your Trust Card, redeem your privileges, and celebrate your success! As you redeem your privileges, please find us, because we want to take your picture and celebrate with you!
