Wheaton High School Monthly Update - February 2021
From Dr. Mugge
First semester is now completed and we are moving on to the second semester of the 2020-2021 school year. Report cards will be distributed February 10-12 via ParentVue and the US Mail if you do not have an email address on file with MCPS. If you have not signed up for ParentVue please contact the school during business hours Monday-Friday 8:00am-4:00pm. It is important for students to start the semester strong by attending classes and completing all assignments on time. Please enjoy some excellent samples of student work included in this newsletter.
The Board of Education met on January 28th to discuss Governor Larry Hogan’s updated guidance on the opening of schools. Dr. Smith shared that MCPS is exploring bringing back groups of students receiving discrete special education services and those in specific Career Technology Education (CTE) programs by March 1st. MCPS will present more information on this plan to the Board of Education on February 9th. MCPS is also proceeding with its plan for the phased-return of additional student groups beginning March 15th. More information about the plan for Wheaton High School will be communicated to parents, who selected their child to return to partial in person instruction, after the February 9th Board of Education Meeting.
A great source of information for students and parents is the Wheaton High School Website and also the MCPS Website. Please check both sites regularly for updated information.
Stay safe, wear a mask, wash your hand frequently, and remember to social distance. Dr. Mugge
Showcasing Student Work
Teachers and students have worked together to create opportunities for students to express themselves. Check out the following projects that students have completed during virtual learning!
Let's celebrate Knight artists in Foundations of Art! They applied many weeks of learning realistic drawing skills to create these impressive self-portraits with personally significant objects. Please enjoy a few of the many outstanding drawings created during virtual art class with Mrs. Bruck and Mr. Dinn.
Knights in Photography 1 used their new knowledge to shoot and edit powerful photos this quarter! They captured the essence of their subjects with thoughtful use of lighting, pose, locations, and compositions. Please enjoy a few amazing portraits from virtual photography class with Ms. Bichard and Mrs. Bruck
Project-Based Learning Continues Virtually
Como artistas modernos, ¿cómo podemos recrear una obra de arte del pasado? (As modern artists, how can we recreate an art piece from the past?) The AP Spanish Language and Culture students were challenged to recreate a famous art piece from the Spanish speaking world as part of a PBL project. The students explored how art represents the beauty of different cultures in the Spanish speaking world.
El cargador de flores (The Flower Carrier) by Diego Rivera recreated by Elmer Mendoza.
Autorretrato con pelo corto (Self-Portrait with Chopped Hair) by Frida Kahlo recreated by Sharon Tomas.
Autorretrato con collar de espinas y colibrí (Self-Portrait with Thorn Necklace & Hummingbird) by Frida Kahlo recreated by Celia Veliz Hernandez.

Photo is taken vertically

Must be taken against a neutral/solid background (if possible)

The Return of the In-Person MCPS Athletics Program During the COVID-19 Pandemic
During the second semester of the 2020–2021 school year, the MCPS high school athletics program will be administered to the greatest extent possible, per state and county health metrics. If health metrics allow, activities and engagement will be offered in-person; if not, virtual engagement opportunities will be offered.
Some overarching considerations include:
- The return of high school interscholastic athletics will align with the secondary appointments model meaning that in person engagement will take place on Saturday, February 27th.
- Participation for coaches and student-athletes would be optional.
- Registration through ParentVue will be required, to allow appropriate planning for families and program operations.
- In-person activities are scheduled to begin with fall sports, which are predominantly conducted outside – except volleyball (which would comply with indoor guidance and/or conduct outdoor activities); bocce, cheerleading, and pompons would occur outside.
- MCPS Athletics will implement an incremental timeline to conduct in-person activities to the extent possible, per health metrics/guidelines.
- Activities may begin virtually and may never transition to in-person, if health metrics are not achieved (or they may fluctuate during the season)
When health metrics are achieved, in-person activities would begin as follows:
- All activities and engagement would comply with CDC, MPSSAA, Montgomery County and MCPS guidelines for youth sports, per the directives of the COVID-19 Task Force for MCPS Athletics.
- Conditioning, skill-based activities, and team practices would occur for the initial 20 days of in person engagement in both models, per MPSSAA regulations.
- Contests would only occur if health metrics allow – this may not occur and may be different for each sport/activity.
