Red Wolf (Canis rufus)
NC Endangered Species
Why is it close to Extinction? How are we Protecting it?
The Red Wolf is close to extinction is because of predator control programs and loss of habitat. We started to capture and relocate the remaining wild Red Wolves to try and increase the population. With the captured wolves, we started a captive breeding program. A few years after the Red Wolf was officially declared extinct in the wild, enough wolves were bred to release into a wildlife refugee. Since then, the experimental population has increased and there are now a few national wildlife refugees and many state owned and private property areas that house Red Wolves.
