A Peek Into Our Week: October 12th-16th

Teacher Notes

I had such a fantastic (and busy) week with your kiddos! We began our reading partnerships, typed our personal narratives, worked on mastering subtraction across zeros (no easy task!), learned several new math games, had our first Addams Family Circle meeting, and really started to settle back into the groove of this whole school thing! Take a peek below to see what we will be up to this week.

Reading- We started our reading partnerships this week and the kids were SO excited to choose books and begin reading. I have also been extremely impressed with how well partnerships are able to communicate their thinking about their books. This week we will continue our unit read aloud, The Tiger Rising. Using the read aloud I will be modeling how to "step inside of the story" to better understand the characters. We will also be working on building a character web using different character traits and most importantly providing "evidence" from the text to support our thinking.

Math- We will be wrapping up the last few lessons in our place value unit this week. New concepts will include: breaking apart addition problems, subtracting larger numbers, and problem solving with addition and subtraction. A study guide will be sent home on Friday as I anticipate anticipate taking our unit test the following week. If you have ANY questions or concerns about concepts taught in this unit please email me this week so I can send home extra practice or resources.

Writing- This week we will be putting the finishing touches on our personal narratives. Majority of students finished typing last week and we also began revising/editing our stories using the Chromebooks. We will spend the beginning of the week printing hard copies of our stories and conducting peer editing conferences. Wednesday we will have a publication celebration which allows students to share all of their hard work. We will wrap up our week by completing a "post on-demand". This is a district requirement that serves as a writing assessment to conclude each unit. The goal is to see that students are applying all of the narrative writing strategies that have been taught and modeled throughout the last four weeks.

Spelling- Your child will receive their first set of spelling words and homework this week. As we mentioned at curriculum night, we focus on our spelling patterns for two weeks. Our first test will be on Friday, October 23rd.

Reading Is Fundamental Field Trips--HELP WANTED!!!

Each year the Royal Oak Public Library hosts the Reading is Fundamental program for fourth grade students across the district. The goal is to familiarize our students with the library, get them started with their very own library card, and get them excited about reading. Our class will be visiting the library in the afternoon on the following dates: October 28th, February 10th, and March 23rd. In order to participate we are in need of parent drivers. You will be responsible for driving and picking up students from the library as well as assisting students in making book choices. We will be leaving at approximately 1:00 and returning by 3:30.

A permission slip and drivers form will be coming home tomorrow, please consider joining us!

Addams Family Cirlces

This past Wednesday we had our first Addams Family Circle meeting. A huge thank you to Shannon Bowman and the numerous parent volunteers who played a key role in getting everything organized and ready to go. Our family circles will be meeting once a month throughout the school year to focus on various character building exercises. The kids are truly excited about this program!

Addams Silent Auction

The auction will be held at Addams on November 13th from 5:30-9:00. Our class is responsible for putting together a basket for the auction and we have already begun gathering ideas. Mrs. Stevens and Mrs. Girgenti (our room moms) will be in contact with you soon to share our theme and to request some help in making sure our basket is the talk of the town!
