What is copyright?

Collection of rights to an author of a piece of work. They can sell it, lease it, and alter it.

What is a License?

A license is permission to use something. If you do not have a license and you take somebody elses work you can face major criminal chargers.

Examples

Public Domain

Isn't protected but copyright laws bc the copyright law has expired the work was created using public money or the creator was donated.

ex: classical literature and music

Freeware

May be used without payment but usually may not be remodified or reverse engineer with the author's permission.

ex: Firefox, skype

Shareware

Copyrighted work that you can copy share and use for free but only for limited time if you want the full program you have to buy it.

ex: Light apps, aol

May be used by the purchaser according to the exact details spelled out in the license agreement.

ex: Video games, iWork

Open Source

Software that includes the source code with the idea that someone can improve upon it.

ex: Firefox, chrome, linux
