An Investment in our Future!
As you can imagine, the responses I get vary as much as our kids in personality, interest, and background. I learn from them as I hope we all do! No mistake, we have some challenges this year and beyond. At times I admit it's hard to maintain a positive outlook but remind myself that we work with kids that need us and we have the best staff to help them grow and meet these challenges! The strain, the heartache, as well as the joy of being a member of a team working with kids ebbs and flows for sure!
The other day as I was working with a challenging kid in the bus zone, I found it difficult to keep a positive perspective. Afterward, needing some reassurance, I asked Mrs. Hayes to tell me that we have great kids at our school! She did and she pointed down the hallway where we had a group of students working on a project on a Friday after school creating some amazing work! I stuck around for our movie night which was organized and orchestrated masterfully by a group of our kids from concept to completion and I was again reminded that we have great kids and #kidscandoamazingthings!
I recently read an essay that our own Mr. Lalack wrote for one of his classes and it talked about the people work that we do, the needs of our kids and the need for our schools to adapt. The evidence shows that programs implemented without fidelity though meaning well, don't add significant value to creating culture. For example, the lessons that we teach about character and responsibility in isolation are relatively ineffective compared to those that are embedded in everyday life, lessons, and interactions with our students.
Unfortunately for some, gone are the days when we as secondary teachers were simply responsible for teaching content measured by a test, where students came prepared to learn and were able to regulate their own behavior. We have entered into a whole new ball game that I would say we are not prepared for...yet. The work that Kayce, Tyler and Britta have done thus far with Character Strong gives me hope that we have found that spark that will enable us to look at what we do in schools through a lens that is built upon a common purpose, spirit, and goal of helping our kids develop skills to help them be successful in school and in life.
There is an investment involved with Character Strong and I think it is well worth it! Please approach our upcoming work with a student-centered mindset to help strengthen our culture at LaCreole as a place that is great for kids and adults alike!
