Sweetwater Union High School District received in 2017 a three year grant from the Department Of Defense (DOD) for the National Math and Science Initiative (NMSI) College Readiness Program to dramatically increase student access to rigorous STEM AP courses in the areas of English, Math, Science, and Computer Science.


Year 1: 2017-18 * Year 2: 2018-19 * Year 3: 2019-2020

We are thrilled to introduce you to Tenesha Villanueva, who will be serving as our new NMSI Program Manager. Most recently, she served as one of High Tech High’s Directors of College Advising, where she led efforts to develop and cultivate a strong college-going culture and provided personalized guidance on the college readiness, admissions and affordability processes for 9th - 12th grade students. Prior to this role, she worked as a college persistence program director for a high school district, where she led efforts around alumni data tracking, program management, and partnership development. Tenesha is passionate about student success and also happens to be a member of San Diego's military community as a military spouse. Did we mention that is lives in our community? Yes, she is local!

NMSI Outstanding Teacher Scholarship for 2017-18

This information is regarding AP STEM Departments per school meeting 2017-18 NMSI goals (Tier 1 / Tier 2)

*If goal is met, all members of the AP Dept. are eligible to receive an outstanding teacher scholarship.

* Teacher scholarship amount and goal is EITHER Tier 1 OR Tier 2 (not AND)

-Tier 1 goal teacher scholarship amount is $1,000

-Tier 2 goal teacher scholarship amount is $2,000


"Math, science and English AP teachers who completed the NMSI Teacher Scholarship application and met the NMSI AP departmental goal will be eligible to receive a scholarship (based on the tier met). Our NMSI Program Manager will start the score verification and award process over the next few weeks in partnership with the NMSI School Director (formerly the Designated Administrator). All eligible teachers will be emailed directly with their next steps once the first part of the process has been completed by the NMSI Partner School Director. Payment of scholarships will happen soon after. Be on the lookout for updates in the coming weeks"

Message for 2017-18 AP STEM Students that passed AP STEM Exam


If last school year (2017-18), you attended a participating NMSI Partner SUHSD high school (Bonita Vista, Chula Vista, Eastlake, Hilltop, Mar Vista, Montgomery, Olympian, Otay Ranch, Southwest, and Sweetwater), AND you took an AP STEM exam, AND you received a qualifying exam score of 3 or better, you are eligible to receive $100 per qualifying exam score!

Cluster #1: ORH, SOH, & SUH

Sessions time frame: 8:30am to 12:30pm


*All (3) AP English study sessions will take place at Sweetwater High School.

*All (3) AP Math and Computer Science study sessions will take place at Southwest High School.

*All (3) AP Science study sessions will take place at Otay Ranch High School.


Student transportation will be provided.
