From Superintendent Dr. Ruth Perez
On the Death of George Floyd (Spanish & English)
Dear PUSD Parents and Families,
It is with a heavy heart that I write to you today. Over the weekend, I have had the opportunity to reflect quite a bit about what is happening across our great country, and it has been difficult to find the right words to say about something that is so troubling.
The death of George Floyd revealed once again the delicate state of race relations within the United States. For too long, African Americans and People of Color have experienced both overt and covert racism throughout their lifetimes. While much progress has been made to improve things over several decades through the tremendous efforts and sacrifices of so many, it is obvious that there is much more to be done. The protests that began in Minneapolis last week and eventually spread across the nation over the weekend capture the rightful anger, frustration, and sadness that everyone is feeling.
I believe that our schools have an essential role to play in the healing and contributing to real, meaningful, and sustained change that will lead to a brighter future for all. By ensuring that all of our students learn to read, write, communicate and do math at a level that will ensure their ability to earn a college degree or certificate and thrive in a career, we are contributing to a brighter future. By ensuring that all our students have access to a wide array of resources like counselors, social workers, and mental health services, we are contributing to a brighter future. We are committed to improving our school cultures using restorative practices, the principles of Safe and Civil Schools, and frameworks like those from programs like Capturing Kids’ Hearts, for we know we are contributing to a brighter future. By working together with you as parents and families in strong partnership we are contributing to a brighter future.
Former President Barack Obama once said:
Change will not come if we wait for some other person or some other time
We are the ones we’ve been waiting for. We are the change that we seek.
We recognize, as educators, we are in a unique position to empower our students to be the ones who will make changes that will lead to a more just and equitable society that is rid of racism and bigotry for good. Please join with us to seize the opportunity to give our students the support, LOVE and CARE that they will need to do this. Below are some resources to support our youth and help families have conversations with their children.
If you need further assistance, please do not hesitate to reach out to your child’s principal or teachers.
Please stay safe, be well and thank you for reading.
