Math, Science, and Social Studies
We began our study of place value last week. I was very pleased to see what students remembered from last year. We will continue working in this unit this week writing numbers in standard form, word form, and expanded form. We will also work on ordering and comparing number.
Science-Students had a great time completing The Jellybean Classification Lab. Students learned to use their 5 senses to classify each jellybean. They used sense of sight and smell to make their predictions, used the classification guide to lead them to the actual jellybean flavor. This lab was a lot of fun and students had a great time. This week we will be completing the "Drops on a Penny Lab" and "Drops on a Penny Variable Lab". This will be another fun week in Science. On Wednesday we will begin our "Eye Wonder" unit.
Social Studies-We will switch from Science to Social Studies mid-way through the 9 weeks.
Reading, Writing, and Word Study
This week we will continue focusing on r controlled words with the o vowel. We are switching our focus this year from simply spelling the words to being able to learn rules and patterns to help in our reading. We will focus this week on the difference in open and closed syllables. We will assess our learning on Friday with a traditional assessment.
Reading--We will be working on building our stamina in reading. We will track stamina on a chart each day and identify our personal habits during independent reading time. We will talk about what Reading Workshop looks like, sounds like, and what each person should be doing during that time. In addition, I will be reading aloud picture books and chapter books.
Writing--We will be doing a variety of Writing activities this week to get our brains working quickly. We will be doing Power WRiting, 5-7-10 writing, "Write" in front of your nose, and making lists. We will also talk about what Writers Workshop looks like, sounds like, and what each person should be doing during that time.
