Student and Staff Highlights
Students in Ms. Wright's government classes participated in a simulation this week, acting as Supreme Court Justices. They met in conference to discuss a real case, Florida v Jardines. The issue they were presented with was: when police bring a trained narcotics detection dog to sniff at the front of a home in which they suspect marijuana is being grown, is that a Fourth Amendment Search? Students had to decide whether or not an anonymous tip was sufficient enough evidence to provide the police with reasonable suspicion to bring the drug dog before a search warrant was issued and then decided if the detection by the drug dog could be used as evidence to then obtain a warrant. After hearing the facts of the case and the arguments from the Trial Court, the Florida Appellate Court and the Florida Supreme Court, students then had to then sift through other court decisions such as Katz v U.S. (1967) and Kyllo v US (2001) and decide how the precedents set in those cases applied to this case.
After a very heated debate, the Supreme Court of Ms. Wright's government class decided to affirm, in a 6-4 vote, the Florida Supreme Court's decision that this did constitute a search under the 4th Amendment and therefore the evidence provided by the dog was illegally obtained. In 2012, the Supreme Court decided, in a 5-4 decision, that this also did violate Mr. Jardines' 4th Amendment Right.

Family Feedback
Families, we want to hear from you. We do our best to support our students and families, however we know at times there are things we might miss, related to academic needs, friendships and relationships, mental health, and safety. Your voice is important to us as we reflect on what we can do better to support our students and families. We know that we can best support kids when we work in partnership with families and the community.
