Virtual Learning for In-Person Learners on Nov. 23-24; Pausing Return to Full In-Person Plans for Middle Schoolers
Because of current staffing challenges related to COVID-19 and the likelihood of additional challenges securing substitutes before the Thanksgiving holiday, all Platte County School District in-person learners will attend classes virtually on Monday, November 23, and Tuesday, November 24.
- Y Club services will be consolidated to Pathfinder Elementary and will be available from 6:30 am to 6 pm on these days for families already signed up.
- Curbside meal pickup (including 5 days of meals) is available on Monday, November 23, at PCMS and Barry locations from 11 am-12:30 pm.
- Activities and practices will proceed as planned on these days. Please refer to information provided by coaches/sponsors.
Additionally, in collaboration with our local health authorities, the District has decided to pause our phased return to full in-person learning at the secondary level. We will not proceed with the November 30 return to full in-person plans in grades 6-8. In-person learners in these grades will continue with their current alternating schedule learning scenario. We will continue to monitor our situation and collaborate with our local health authorities on our plans to return to full in-person (with a remote option) starting with second semester for all secondary learners.

FERPA Virtual Learning Notice (Reminder)
As part of the 2020-2021 school year, your student will participate in virtual or distance learning. This virtual learning may occur via a digital platform like Canvas, Google Classroom, or Google Meets that will require participation by your student in a virtual setting with other students receiving the same services.
Due to the nature of virtual learning, it is possible the parent/guardian, sibling, or other related person of another student in your student’s class may hear or see your student as they are engaged in learning.
The Department of Education’s Student Privacy Policy Office (“SPPO”) stated in its March 30, 2020 virtual learning guidance “a person merely seeing or hearing your student does not violate their or your rights under Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (“FERPA”). Another person sitting in the same room as your student is treated no differently than a visitor would be during an in-person class.” It is not possible or feasible for the District to dictate the location of other individuals present during virtual sessions within a student’s home.
Our staff members will take precautions to comply with District Policy and FERPA to prohibit and limit the disclosure of personally identifiable information. Additionally, please note District Policy KKB expressly prohibits recording any virtual classroom session. This long-standing policy exists to protect the rights of all students under FERPA.
I have been advised that my student may be seen or heard by other individuals present during virtual learning sessions. I have also been advised of the District’s prohibition on the recording of the virtual sessions and agree to comply with Policy KKB.
If you desire that your child not receive virtual education services, please contact your student’s building principal: hanigerj@platteco.k12.mo.us.

ECSE FAMILIES
Next Week
As you already know, next week (November 23-24) will look a little different than expected. I will upload a circle time video each day (Monday and Tuesday) via Google Classroom and email (by 10am). It will be no longer than 30 min each time. This video will allow families to view the activity at any time versus having to attend at a specific time. A packet of number practice pages and letter pages was sent home today in a plastic sleeve. These are for review and practice. A turkey craft ("how-to" video on Google Classroom) will be uploaded on Google Classroom for fine motor. Your child will be able to practice letters, numbers, and language skills through Google Classroom with some online games. You will also find songs and recorded activities to reinforce skills on our YouTube page. Your child's school box is in their backpack to use to complete the turkey craft and any other activity that they choose to do. Please let me know if you have any questions. Happy Turkey Day! –Ms. Kristy and Ms. Rebecca
Note from Ms. Amanda: If your child is working on speech and language goals, be looking for paper materials sent home in their backpack; directions should be posted on the materials. A short (10 minute) speech & language activity (specific to your child's speech & language goals) will also be posted to Google Classroom on Monday and Tuesday. The activities will be ones that we have done together as a class, so your child should be familiar with them and know what to expect. They will need your help in completing the activities. Feel free to comment (in Google Classroom) on how the activity went! Happy Thanksgiving!
Clothing Reminder
As the seasons change, remember to send in extra clothes that are weather appropriate for your child in the event they have an accident at school.
