KAS Global Issues Club Sees More Green

We are proud of the students in the KAS Global Issues Network (GIN) Club and the work that they are doing to create a better future for KAS and the earth we share. They have led many efforts around campus to make KAS more environmentally friendly. These efforts include our Zero Plastic Lunch initiatives, our efforts to decrease single-use plastics on campus, and most recently our improved recycling bins which you will see around the campus very soon. The recycling efforts include selection of new recycling bins, designing clear and effective labels, and creating a campaign to educate all at KAS about proper recycling. You can see their latest video here:

Overall, the GIN club’s efforts are helping to support our goals as a LEED school, and they help KAS support a better future for all. Special thanks to our business office, facilities department, catering company, and faculty sponsors for partnering together with the GIN club in these efforts. Together, we are all creating a healthier and more sustainable school.

Dragons Athletics

Our Varsity teams have begun their regular season games for Volleyball and Boys Soccer. Our teams always appreciate the support and cheering at their home games. Games coming up in the following week are boys soccer official seeding games, first against IIS at IIS on September 23, and then again on Wednesday the 25th September vs ICA at KAS.

For Varsity TISSA games, only the top 3 seeded teams from our South/Central division will be eligible to attend the final tournament. Our division consists of KAS, MAK, IIS, ICA and AST.

Our MS/HS swimmers are currently at their annual MAC swim meet (September 21). We look forward to some great results.

All upcoming games and tournaments are listed on the Athletic Website Homepage. Home games typically start between 15:30 and 15:45. Our athletes would love to hear the roar and see the Dragon support from the sidelines.

Changes to ES and MS Student Email

KAS Elementary and Middle Schools are pleased to announce our shift to a “Walled Garden” platform for our student email system.” A “Walled Garden” is a metaphor for a closed platform; a software system wherein the carrier or service provider has control over applications, content, and media, and restricts convenient access to non-approved applications or content. This is in contrast to an open platform, wherein consumers generally have unrestricted access to applications and content. This protection means that no outside party may contact our students without the explicit permission on the school. This new safeguard will be in place immediately.

Taking Care of Business (Club)

During the weekend of September 7th/8th, five members of our Business Club - Charlene Liu, Laura Kuo, Jessica Tseng, Elliot Lo and Han Li Seon - and their adviser Mr Rock, travelled to Taipei to participate in a hands-on entrepreneurship competition at Taipei American School. Over the course of the competition students had to identify a problem, create a solution, write a start up plan and pitch the idea to a team of judges. Our students decided on human trafficking as their problem, and proposed an app that would help citizens and law enforcement around the world find people who have gone missing. Their hard work paid off and they came home with second place. We are proud to know that they represented KAS with such an important global issue. Compassion in action!

在9月7、8日那個週末,五位Business Club的成員Charlene Liu, Laura Kuo, Jessica Tseng, Elliot Lo and Han Li Seon以及社團指導老師Mr.

12th grade IB students will be filling out forms in October to register for IB Exams in May. IB exam fees must be paid before students can be formally registered. Students should be sharing information about exams with their parents within a few weeks.

Students wishing to take AP exams in May are in the process of registering for AP exams. In the past, students paid for AP exams in March; AP now requires students to register and pay in October. Students may register for AP exams even if they are not taking an AP class.

College Corner

This week, Ms. Newman and I are attending the CIS/EARCOS counselors conference in Bangkok. There will be about 150 universities in attendance from many different countries. In the past few years I have noticed that our students’ choices are changing into more international interests and programs. This conference will be especially beneficial for us to make more contacts in the international circuit to facilitate the application process for our students & families.

Upcoming College Visits

We have added below a few more colleges who will visit us in the near future. Please try to attend even if your child does not plan to attend that college. You may learn something new or learn of a new program that will spark a new interest. Better still, you may learn of a university that would grant large merit scholarships. Think of the bigger picture. These representatives who you meet are the ones who actually read the applications and recommend acceptances or denials of students. Also, you never know where these reps have worked before this college they are representing. I had one student who talked to a lesser known college rep but wasn’t planning to attend that university and his first choice was to get into a top Science school. It just so happened that the admissions rep that the student talked to had worked at Stanford before this school. He was so impressed with the young man that he contacted an ex colleague at Stanford who in turn, contacted the student and urged him to apply to Stanford. As they say, networking is everything. Next time you talk to any of the representatives, ask them what other colleges they worked at. You may be pleasantly surprised!

The next few weeks we have more colleges visiting us. Please come out to meet the representatives.

  • Sept 23 University of Northern Texas 12:30 Room167

  • Sept 30 Brown University 12 noon Lecture Hall

  • Sept 30 University of Pennsylvania 12 noon Lecture Hall

  • Oct 1 University of Queensland Australia 15:30 Lecture Hall

  • Oct 1 UBC Lecture Hall 12:45
