Kindergarten Update
February is such a busy month in Kindergarten! We will begin the month learning all about groundhogs. We will do many literacy and science activities that involve groundhogs. On Friday, February 7th, we will celebrate being 100 days smarter. All classes will be celebrating the 100th day of school. We will do several math and literacy activities all day on Friday, February 7th. Valentine's parties will be held on Friday the 14th. During that week, we will do many Valentine activities. We will also have a field trip coming to us on February 12th! We will learn much more about our teeth on this day! We will also celebrate and learn more about the President of the United States. We will celebrate all past Presidents as well as our current President.
We are looking forward to learning so much during the shortest month of the year!

Guidance Corner
February is upon us and one month of 2020 is in the books. This year is a special one because it is a Leap year. We get one extra day in February to enjoy this year! A book that can help you explain what a leap year is to your kids is called Leap Year Book for kids by Barbara Sutton-Smith. Here is a website for some fun “Leap Day” Activities as well. https://howdoesshe.com/its-a-leap-year-21-fun-leap-day-activities/
We are always taking names for our Backpack weekend food program. If your child is in need of quick, healthy, easy snacks for the weekends and long breaks from school, we are able to help with that. Please contact Ms. Warren if interested- enrollment is on- going, although new additions may have to wait until the end of the following month if they enroll past a certain date.
I am taking referrals for Session 2 of my Counseling Groups. Topics include:
Social Skill Development
Loss and Grief
Changing Families (including children involved in divorce, non traditional families, being raised by step parents, aunts and uncles, grandparents, etc).
Stress and anxiety
If you have a student who would benefit from one of these groups, please contact Ms. Warren. Session 2 groups will be starting in a week so let me know if you are interested asap!
What are we talking about in Guidance classes this month?
We are finishing up Kindness and moving into Friendship and Good Judgement. We will talk about ways to make friends and how to be a good friend. We will discuss using good judgment and making good choices at home, at school and in our community. We will talk about being healthy both mind and body, and making good choices to stay healthy.
And as always, please feel free to reach out to me if I can help you or your child in anyway.
Thanks! Ms. Warren :-)

We are continuing to participate in the North Carolina Children’s Book Award (NCCBA) program. Students will hear the books read to them as well as participate in activities that allow them to make connections and enhance their literacy skills. Student voting will take place in March! Click here to see the books that are in the program.
We are also excited to celebrate Coretta Scott King Book Literature Awards Week during the week of February 16 - 22, 2020. We will be partnering with the The African American Museum of History and Culture located at Loray Mill.

From the Stage
In first grade, we will continue with the use of instruments, pitched and non pitched. We will soon begin a unit in how ELA and music can be used to understand quarter notes and eighth notes and their relationship to a steady beat. Of course, we will ALWAYS do this through the use of playing and singing.
