WLCSD Buildings, Infrastructure and Equity Bond - Election on May 7
At its Feb. 7 meeting, the Walled Lake Schools’ Board of Education approved moving forward with a $316 million bond election May 7, 2019. It will not be a tax increase to District residents. Superintendent Kenneth Gutman said: “We have a unique opportunity at this time where we can request a $316 million bond without a tax increase. The District currently has five outstanding debt obligations, four of which will be paid off within five years, and other factors that give the District this opportunity.”

MTSS Professional Learning for our Teachers
This afternoon our staff are engaged in a professional development session around Multi-Tiered Systems of Support (MTSS) tier 1 academic instruction. Tier 1 instruction is the instruction that takes place in your child’s classroom on a daily basis, which includes universal strategies for intervention and accommodations available to all students. Tier 2 instruction is designed to support the 10-15% of students that require additional supports and structures to be successful. Tier 3 instruction is designed to be much more intensive as a means to support up to 5% of students that require a more specialized instructional approach. Staff took time today to focus in on one of the 6 Embedded Practices of a lesson from our district Instructional Framework, which include:
· Supportive and Productive Environment,
· Learning Targets and Success Criteria,
· Discourse,
· Effective Questioning,
· Descriptive Feedback, and
· Balanced Assessment.
Additionally, Professional Learning Teams spent time to apply the Instructional Framework to an upcoming lesson with a particular focus on these Embedded Practices. Time to work collaboratively around instruction is incredibly valuable and we appreciate the community supporting our staff having this time. We know that if we continue to strengthen our application of the Instructional Framework through this work, that our students will see the benefit in the classroom!

Second Step Announcement!
Parents, this week your children focused on the second step lesson below. Please take a moment to talk with your children about how they took time to show positive behavior at school.
P - Pick the Best Solution:
The final Problem-Solving Step at Keith Elementary School is P: Pick the best solution! Once you have named the positive and negative consequence of each solution you thought of, you can pick the solution that works best. It’s easy to remember our Problem-Solving Steps because they spell the word “step” S-T-E-P. Using the Problem-Solving Steps will help you get along better with your friends and family. This week, if you have a problem, remember to STEP it up and use the Problem-Solving Steps.
Our focus for next week is listed below. We will review the following with your children when they return to school on Monday.
Inviting to Play:
At Keith Elementary School it’s important to notice and have empathy when other kids are being left out. Inviting other student to play is caring thing to do. When we invite others to play, we will get to know them. At recess this week, notice if anyone is being left out and be sure to ask that person to join in and play.
Math Skipping Test
Our current math standards are more rigorous and demanding than ever. Students are expected to develop a deep understanding of concepts leading to fluency with facts and procedures, and the ability to clearly communicate their mathematical thinking. Further, students must pass a demanding sequence of high school math courses in order to meet graduation requirements. In response to the increased expectations for all students, we have adjusted the content focus and instructional approaches in all of our math courses. Because of the higher standards and to ensure student success at all points of their mathematical education, we are using the procedures described below to accelerate students.
In order to skip a course in the math sequence, students must demonstrate proficiency in the
content and skills of the course they are attempting to skip. Applications are accepted online March 1-March 28. Testing will take place after school at Keith on April 16.
The process and procedures described on the document attached below apply to all students
currently in grades 2 through 7. Students attempting to test-out of high school courses will
use the existing process described on the district website. Parents of students in kindergarten or first grade who have indications their child is possibly ready to skip a year of Math should contact their building principal.
If you have questions after reviewing the process, please contact your building principal or me.
Thank you for your partnership in education.
Sincerely,
John M. Gregg
Math/Science Coordinator
