In the month of March we celebrate Women’s History Month! Every morning during morning announcements students are sharing about a historical or influential woman who has contributed to making our world a better place!

Beginning tomorrow, Monday, March 6th. Parents arriving after 2 PM to pick up their child will be asked to join the car loop or wait outside on the sidewalk until dismissal begins. These measures are being put in place to minimize the disruption to classrooms during learning time and to allow a safe dismissal for all students. Thank you for understanding and cooperation with this matter.

  • March 10, Family Dance, 6-8, Gym

  • March 17, Teacher workday and professional development, no school for students

"Attention Woodbrook Community!

A group of 4th grade students have gathered and will host a donation drive starting Monday, March 6, 2023 – Friday, March 24, 2023. This drive will be to support the local Blue Ridge Area Food Bank! Students are requesting non-perishable foods items. These items will be collected at Woodbrook. Your student can bring the items to school or a family member can drop the items off at the collection container!

The organizers of this event want everyone to be reminded that it is important to “give and be kind to others that may not have”.

We are beyond grateful for your kindness and contributions as we work together to support our local community."

Going forward, Woodbrook will also send out a Remind message once we hear of any weather related delays or closures. If you are not currently on Remind, please reach out to your child’s teacher to sign up.

Second, we are excited to announce the second musical performance of the year. On February 10th, we will have the 2nd/3rd grade concert - "Our Musical Debut" at 1:15 pm and 6:30 pm - in the WES gym. We had sixty volunteers during the United Day of Caring who worked on projects that included: painting a conference room and the curbs on our car loop, weeding and mulching by the car loop, and creating a new jumping obstacle course for recess!

As a reminder, there is no school for students on Monday September 26. This is a teacher work day where all will participate in professional learning.

Have a safe and joyful weekend!

We will be distributing a guide, “Keeping Our Kids Safe & Healthy in a Digital World,” to all of our students’ families next week. These are guides to educate, inform, and create discussions around being safe in the Digital World within our community. The goal is for every family to receive a hard copy. There is also a digital copy and Spanish copy available as well. Please let us know how many copies in English and how many copies in Spanish you would like for your class?

Comcast Internet

We know that many families depend on the Internet, whether at school or at home, so they can do homework, search for jobs, access financial or government services and much more. That is why we are excited to let you know that we’d like to sponsor you for months of free Internet Essentials service, if you are eligible and are approved.

You can check if you qualify by applying at InternetEssentials.com – be sure to use the promo code below when you apply. To receive a PROMO CODE, please call the school at 973-6600.

Families may apply by visiting https://apply.internetessentials.com/ or by calling (844) 963-0178 with their Promo Code (Call the school 973-660 for Promo Code). Comcast says that the phone number is the BEST way to apply.

Dear Woodbrook Families,

On Friday, we celebrated our first school wide morning meeting of the year. A big thank you to our specialists who led our first meeting. During school wide morning meetings, we greet one another, share what we are learning, and celebrate our wonderful learning community at Woodbrook. School wide morning meetings also provide the opportunity to learn more about Woodbrook CARES traits. What are Woodbrook CARES traits? C stands for Cooperation. A stands for Assertiveness. R stands for Respect. E stands for Empathy. S stands for Self-control. At Woodbrook, we talk about how we want to show all those traits in order to learn, make friends, and participate positively in the Woodbrook community.

We strive everyday to create a positive community for our students at Woodbrook. Yesterday, we sent a letter home via email to let you know of upcoming student and parent surveys to get your input on how we are doing. You can find the letter linked here as well. We are so thankful for you sharing your child with us this year and we look forward to welcoming them back in the fall. We are so fortunate to have such a wonderful, caring, and supportive school community.

Thank you to our PTO who brought in Torchy's for our end-of-year staff luncheon! It was absolutely delicious and so appreciated by the entire staff. Thank you for making us all feel special and appreciated!!

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

First and foremost, we acknowledge the heaviness in all of our hearts from the tragic event in Texas earlier this week. We know that this news coupled with the incident that took place at our school this week made it that much harder. We appreciate all of your outreach, support, and feedback you have provided this week. It helps us move forward and makes us a stronger community. Always, the safety of your children and our staff will be the most important work we do every day.

Lastly, we want to reintroduce our school counselors, Cheryl Drew and Sharon Buscher. They are two of the most amazing people, and between them have over 40 years of experience. They are here always to support students and staff, and are also available to parents/guardians who may need support and/or resources when talking with your child during a difficult time.

We hope everyone is able to enjoy a peaceful and enjoyable Memorial Day Weekend.

Your partners in education,

Kristen Williams and John Wheeler

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

Thank you to everyone for a wonderful Teacher Appreciation Week! The staff felt all the love sent their way. Thank you again to the PTO, families, and students for supporting our AMAZING staff this week! The genuine thought that was put into each day was so appreciated.

We cannot believe that we are in the month of May with about one more month to go for this school year. As a reminder, the SOL testing period begins next week for students in grades 3-5. To all of our 3-5 families, please be sure to have students arrive on time as testing begins first thing in the morning. A good night’s rest and a yummy breakfast will certainly help as well! :)

We have lots of celebrations for the month of May and June. May is the month we celebrate Asian Pacific American Heritage Month – a celebration of Asians and Pacific Islanders in the United States. To learn more about this celebration, click here for resources.

The Fifth grade Rising Up Parade will take place on Thursday, June 9, 2022. The 5th grade team is planning a drive-through parade and families can arrive any time between 4:30-6:00 as we celebrate our 5th graders moving up to middle school!

Dear Woodbrook

This week is National School Volunteer Week and we want to take this opportunity to say thank you to all of our family and community members who support our school each and every day. Whether you help by sending in snacks and/or school supplies to our classes, weeding and picking up trash on school grounds, feeding and caring for the chickens, or supporting teachers with home projects, we appreciate YOU!

We’d like to extend a special thank you to our PTO Board members who have worked tirelessly over the past couple of years to support our school in new & innovative ways during this time of the pandemic. We could not have made it through without you and are so appreciative of your commitment and partnership with our school.

Many of our PTO Board members are wrapping up their time and are seeking new folks who would like to join the team in serving our school. If interested, please reach out to our current PTO president, Missy Bishop at woodybearpto@gmail.com and/or look below for further details about the various roles.

Reminder… Class pictures and individual makeups will take place this Wednesday, April 27th.

Also this Wednesday, we will recognize our 3 amazing Office Associates - Susan Reuschling, Ali Davison, and Cecilia Leiva. Together, they are the glue that holds us all together. If you have an opportunity - please join us in thanking them for their commitment and dedication to our school. We are so lucky to have them!

Lastly, this past Friday on Earth Day, our 4th grade students had an opportunity to work in collaboration with students from Monticello High School and Catec to clean up our courtyard, plant wildflowers, and build and install (safe) bee houses for pollination! They did an amazing job in serving our community and the earth and we look forward to enjoying the fruits of their labor.

Best,

Kristen Williams and John Wheeler

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

It has been wonderful to welcome all the students back to school after spring break!

This week, Mrs. Williams and Mr. Wheeler joined fourth grade classroom Morning Meetings to welcome students back and to introduce “We are Woodbrook!” April is the month we celebrate who we are as a community and have enjoyed these conversations with the fourth grade and we look forward to joining in other grade level teams to talk with students about ways that they all support and create this wonderful community. Fourth graders have talked about creating “green” teams and other volunteer ways to support the school! More, Mr. Wheeler has started reaching out to fourth and fifth graders for book recommendations that reflect and inspire our students as well!

Thank you for your continued donations of water, snacks and other supplies for our classroom. As the warmer weather arrives, we also recommend sending a reusable water bottle with your child each day.

Lastly, we’d like to shout out to our Custodial Team as we recognize them this week for their dedication and hard work in keeping our school safe and clean. Thank you Mr. Man (Gurung), Ms. Desper, Ms. Flores, Ms. Walker, and Mr. Tamang. You are the best!

Thank you everyone and “We are Woodbrook!”

Kristen Williams & John Wheeler

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

Good afternoon and happy Friday! We hope you all are starting to enjoy the warmer weather. We had another great 4 days of school, and we want to thank the PTO for the thoughtful treats. The staff really appreciated the support!

We are also excited to share the news of our Golden Apple Award winner! We had so many wonderful nominations and we are excited to share that this year’s winner is Senora Soto! She is incredibly worthy of this award, and we are so thankful for her service to our school and communities. Congratulations, Senora Soto!

This month at Woodbrook, we are celebrating the Multicultural March by focusing on the importance of names! We know how much history and identity are encapsulated in a name, and we want to celebrate as many as we can!

Have a great weekend,

Kristen & John

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

Good afternoon and happy Friday!

Today, we hosted our annual Martin Luther King Jr. Ceremony where a student from each grade level was recognized for exhibiting the qualities that we admire most in Dr. King. We are so proud of all of our recipients and grateful for their leadership, kindness, and all that they bring to our school community. Click here to access the slide presentation from today’s ceremony. You will hear from some of our previous recipients about the purpose of this ceremony and why it’s important to our school community. You’ll also be able to see who received the honors this year.

As a reminder… Starting March 1st, masking for students in our school building will be optional. Masking is still required for all students while on a school bus and for all staff and visitors in our school.

Our staff has been informed and trained on this latest change, and we do not anticipate any educational disruptions due to this shift. We will remain vigilant with our other mitigation strategies, including contact tracing, to provide the safest environment possible for our students. If you choose to have your child mask at school, we will continue to have extra masks if needed. We encourage families to research the benefits and drawbacks of masking and make an informed decision for your family. The school does not need to be informed about your decision.

We will not be able to monitor the masking of children. If you would like your child to wear a mask, please have a discussion with them about this at home. Our teachers and counselors will work closely with all children to make sure there are no negative social consequences (teasing or bullying) around this choice. We appreciate you reinforcing this at home: masking is a family choice and we must respect that.

Please do not hesitate to contact us with any questions regarding this change, or any other school related concern. We appreciate your ongoing support.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

We really had a great time at school this week celebrating both Valentine’s Day and the 100th Day of School - two of the best parts about being in an elementary school! :) And, in case you missed it, some of our students were asked to share what they love most about our school counseling team. Click here to check out their interview honoring Ms. Buscher and Ms. Drew during last week’s Counselor Appreciation Week!

As was shared by our Superintendent earlier this week, the Virginia Law regarding the masking of students in our school has changed. Big picture

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

We had a fantastic week celebrating our two amazing school counselors, Ms. Buscher and Ms. Drew. We are so thankful for their passion and dedication to our school community and we especially love their great sense of humor!

As a reminder, there is no school for students next Friday, February 18th as it is a teacher workday. Due to the number of days missed for snow, students will now attend school on May 20th. We will send reminders as it gets closer. We know that the many changes to the calendar this year has been a lot to keep up with. Thank you for your patience and understanding.

Lastly, we’d like to thank all of our families for the generous donations made to our school over the past several years. Due to your generosity, the Woodbrook PTO announced this past week that they will be donating $15,000 to purchase new books for our school. This will give us the opportunity to update the learning resources used to teach reading and to diversify our collection of books so they represent the students of Woodbrook Elementary. As a staff, we are so appreciative of the many ways that our families support the work that we do for our students.

Have a wonderful weekend!

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

Please join us in welcoming our new lead custodian, Mr. Man Gurung. Mr. Man, (which is what the students will call him) has worked at Woodbrook for several years as one of the evening custodial staff members. We are happy to now have him join us during the day to support the entire school!

We’d also like to welcome back retired elementary school principal Sharon Wilcox, who served as additional administrative support earlier in the school year. I am happy to share that she will be with us two days per week for the remainder of this school year. Ms. Wilcox has already established strong connections amongst the staff and students at our school so we are thrilled she is able to return!

The Magic Show has been rescheduled for next Friday, February 11th at 7:00pm. This is a PTO fundraising event that will take place on Zoom. Online tickets can be purchased up until show time. If you need scholarship tickets please reach out to your child's teacher and let them know. Click here to order your tickets!

We are grateful for the full week of school this week and hope everyone enjoys a restful weekend!

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

While we were all surprised by the shortened day today, we were most thankful that it did not get in the way of our school-wide celebration of Mr. Joe. We were able to bundle up and gather safely on the bus loop to bid him farewell and thank him for his 26 years of service. His family was able to join us as we showered him with gifts and praise for all that he has given to our school. Monday will be his last day and he will be sorely missed!

Due to school’s closing early today, we will need to reschedule the Magic Show. Even though it’s a virtual event, The magician does use one of our schools to actually set up and host the event from. Thank you for understanding and stay tuned for a new date for this event.

Have a safe and enjoyable weekend! We hope to see everyone for a FULL week of school next week and don’t forget to submit your “Miles Walked for Martin” by the end of the day on Monday, January 31st.

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

It is with a heavy, yet joyful heart that we share the news that our lead custodian, Joe Gaines, is retiring at the end of this month. After 26 years of dedication to Woodbrook Elementary, “Mr Joe”, as he’s lovingly called by students and staff, will spend his last day with us on Monday, January 31st.

His presence and kind heart will be sorely missed in the hallways of our school! Staff and students have a few surprises planned for him next week. Unfortunately, with the COVID restrictions, we are unable to invite our families to join us in person for his farewell. That being said, if your family would like to send in a card for Mr. Joe, you can send it via the backpack by next Friday (28th) and we will be sure Mr. Joe receives it!

Please make note that the report card timeline has been changed due to the days missed for weather. The parent portal will now open for parents to view report cards on Friday, February 11th at 3:30pm.

Just a reminder that Monday (1/24) and Tuesday (1/25) there is no school for students as they are slated for teacher workdays. We look forward to seeing the children back on Wednesday, January 26th!

January 14, 2022

Greetings Woodbrook Families,

It has been wonderful having the students back in school this week and we are so hoping that mother nature will not prevent us from coming back on time next week. As a reminder, all schools are closed this upcoming Monday, January 17th, in observance of Martin Luther King, Jr. Day.

We had hoped to host the annual “Walk for Martin” event in person at Woodbrook this year, but unfortunately, we have decided to keep it virtual due to the inclement weather forecasted for this Sunday evening. We invite all families to participate by choosing a cause and logging miles walked during the month of January, as we honor and recognize Martin Luther King, Jr. Further details and important links can be found below.

The deadline to nominate a Woodbrook teacher for this year’s Golden Apple Award is Monday, January 24th. Please take a moment to recognize one of our amazing and incredibly dedicated teachers by completing this brief Golden Apple Nomination Form.

We hope everyone has found ways to be safe and warm during this time. For more information about school delays/closures due to inclement weather, here is the link to the county website. We are really looking forward to welcoming the students back on Monday!

According to our records, your child is absent today. Please email the front office at wesoffice@k12albemarle.org or call at 434-973-6600 to verify your child’s absence. Thank you!”

Tardies

We are noticing a continued trend of late arrivals to school and as mentioned above, want to remind families that the tardy bell rings at 7:55am and the school day begins promptly at 8:00am. It’s important for all students to start their school day on time so they are able to participate in the class morning meeting and begin their day in a calm and productive way.

We are concerned about the safety of our students who are arriving by car after 8:00am as staff members must be back in the building no later than 8:00am to start the school day. For this reason, we are asking families who are arriving after 8:00am to park and assist their children to the front office to check them in.

A Message From PE Teachers

We hope you are doing well. It has been amazing to get to teach PE in person again! Your kids are awesome and we love getting to see them every day. We’ve gotten off to a good start, and look forward to having a great school year!

We are asking to make sure that your child is wearing the appropriate shoes on PE days. We have been reminding students to wear shoes to PE that are close-toed, and are fastened (laces or Velcro) to their feet. Unfortunately, we are still seeing a lot of sandals, Crocs, and even flip flops. We are beginning to do more activities with various equipment and we want to allow every student to participate. For safety reasons, if they do not have the appropriate shoes they will have to sit out.

If you have any questions about appropriate shoes, feel free to contact Mrs. Lutz, Mrs. O’Connor, or Mr. Massie. If you need assistance in getting appropriate PE shoes for your child please contact our Guidance Counselors (Mrs. Buscher, and Ms. Drew).

Thank You,

Mr. Massie, Mrs. Lutz, and Mrs. O’Connor

September 3, 2021

Dear Woodbrook Families,

We had another wonderful week! Teachers and students are really getting into the rhythms and routines of school. Many classroom teachers and grade level teams have started sending out their grade specific newsletters, so be on the lookout for the latest news on your child’s class. As always, thank you for trusting us and for allowing us to serve your beautiful children. Hope you all have a fun, restful, and safe Labor Day. Following are a few important updates and reminders:

Important Dates for the Coming Weeks

  • Labor Day Holiday - Monday, September 6th - There will be no school on this day.

  • Grades 3-5 Growth Assessments - September 8th & 9th - We will be administering growth assessments to our 3rd, 4th, and 5th grade students in reading and math. These brief assessments will provide teachers with a starting point for planning instruction in order to meet the needs of your students.

  • Back to School Night - Evening of September 23rd - Stay tuned for details. This event will take place virtually via Zoom.

Arrival and Dismissal

  • Bus Updates: Today was the first day of the AM bus schedule. We hope this change will improve traffic in the mornings. It seemed to go smoothly this morning, and we are thankful for all your efforts in helping your child arrive at the bus stop on time this morning.

  • Car Updates: Car drop-off and pick-up has really started to move more quickly and a huge thank you to all the parents and staff during car pick-up and drop-off.

  • Walker Updates: We dismissed students from the gym this week. Thank you to parents for your patience as we’ve made these improvements for walker dismissal.

August 29, 2021

Dear Woodbrook Families,

We had a fantastic first week of school! Teachers and students were joyful and excited to be in school! We are so thankful to have most of our students back at Woodbrook this year. We successfully completed our first 5 day school week since 2019! Now that’s something to celebrate! Thank you for trusting us and for allowing us to serve your beautiful children. Following are a few important updates and reminders:

Important Dates for the Coming Weeks

  • Labor Day Holiday - Monday, September 6th - There will be no school on this day.
  • Back to School Night - Evening of September 23rd - Stay tuned for details. This event will take place virtually this year on Zoom.

Arrival and Dismissal

Thank you for your continued patience and understanding as we continue to improve the arrival and dismissal times. From Monday to Friday, we saw progress and we hope our changes will continue to decrease the amount of time it takes to drop-off and pick-up your children.

  • Walkers: We have more walkers this year than ever before and we are excited for them to walk home. To ensure safety, we are asking walkers to depart after buses depart approximately at 2:35 PM. For parents who walk their children home, they can leave once they arrive. We’ll have cones and signs to direct them to avoid the bus lot. Thank you for your patience and understanding as we try different procedures that will ensure everyone’s safety.

  • We ask that all parents picking their children up by car, remain in their car in the car loop. Because all staff members are involved in the dismissal process, we cannot accommodate parents coming in early to avoid the car pickup. We promise to keep working on the process so that it will run smoothly for all and bring down the wait time.
