Welcome to Tech Design in 209
Mrs. Gallagher
After a successful launch in 2017, 5th graders at Hewlett Elementary School will continue to have the exciting opportunity to participate in a Tech Design class again this year!
What is Tech Design?
This course is designed to spiral through several important areas of study using the ISTE Standards for Students as a guide. Students in this class will learn about digital citizenship, computer programming & robotics, the engineering design process, 3D design & printing, and much more!
What are the ISTE Student Standards?
ISTE Standards for Students are a learner-driven process of exploration, creativity, and discovery using technology for learning. They are designed to empower student voice and ensure that learning is a student-driven process. There are seven standards which include Empowered Learner, Digital Citizen, Knowledge Constructor, Innovative Designer, Computational Thinker, Creative Communicator, and Global Collaborator.
What is ISTE?
The International Society for Technology in Education (ISTE), is home to a passionate community of global educators who believe in the power of technology to transform teaching and learning, accelerate innovation and solve tough problems in education.
Digital Citizenship
Students will recognize the rights, responsibilities & opportunities of living, learning & working in an interconnected digital world, & act & model in ways that are safe, legal & ethical.
The Engineering Design Process
Computer Programming
Students develop & employ strategies for understanding solving problems in ways that leverage the power of technological methods to develop & test solutions.
3D Design & Printing
Robotics
Spheros are app-enabled robots that foster creativity through discovery & play, all while laying the foundation for computer science.

About Me: Kristina Gallagher
I've been an upper-elementary teacher for almost 20 years! In fact, this is my 15th year teaching in the Hewlett Woodmere School District. I spent the first half of my life growing up on Cape Cod in Massachusetts. I graduated from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst, as well as Wheelock College in Boston, & earned my graduate degree from Brooklyn College. Before coming to Hewlett Elementary, I was a Montessori certified teacher in Cambridge, MA and Brooklyn Heights, NY. Presently, I live in Lynbrook with my husband, our two sons, & our dog.
Innovative teaching has always been an interest of mine. Most recently, I have explored the many uses of technology in the classroom.
I am passionate about what I teach! I believe in creating a learner centered classroom & student driven, project based learning. Because of my growth mindset, teaching Tech Design is the perfect match for me!
