Assistant Principal Thrun's Message...

You may have heard the term SEL, and wondered to yourself, what does SEL stand for? SEL stands for social and emotional learning and is the process through which children understand and manage emotions, set and achieve goals, feel and show empathy for others, establish and maintain positive relationships, and make responsible decisions.

Here at Arctic Light, we use this framework to cultivate a caring learning climate and provide each student with an equitable, supportive and welcoming learning environment. The five core competencies will be used in many ways and across many settings throughout the year.

As a Title 1 school we receive supplemental federal funds to support student learning. These additional funds help us to provide the best professional development for our staff. This year several of our staff are attending the CASEL SEL Conference on October 2-4th in Chicago. Stay tuned for opportunities to learn more about SEL from your child and/ or your classroom teacher.

If you have any questions, please contact your child’s teacher or myself. We are always happy to answer your questions.

Mrs. Thrun

Assistant Principal – Arctic Light
